📏 MTN MoMo limits in Ghana

Your MoMo account tier decides how much you can deposit. These limits took effect on 1 March 2024, as reported by Graphic Online:

🇺🇬 How to deposit with MTN MoMo in Uganda

Ugandan casinos offer two routes: a payment prompt sent from the cashier, which is the easiest, and a USSD payment on *165# using a merchant code the casino gives you.

Method 1: the cashier prompt

1. Log in and go to My Account, then Deposit.
2. Select MTN Mobile Money from the payment list.

🔄 How M-Pesa casino withdrawals work

Depositing and withdrawing work in opposite directions. When you deposit, you pay the casino from your M-Pesa menu or approve a pop-up prompt, usually into the operator’s paybill. When you withdraw, the casino sends the money to you as a business payment, straight to the M-Pesa line linked to your account. You don’t dial anything or enter your PIN to receive it.

That has three practical consequences:

• Your registered number matters. Kenyan sites tie your account, paybill deposits and payouts to the number you registered with. If you change SIM cards, contact support before you withdraw.
• The casino decides the timing. Most licensed sites pay automatically once checks are done, but large or first-time withdrawals can be reviewed by hand.
• Taxes come off first. In Kenya, the operator deducts the withdrawal tax before sending the money, so the amount on your M-Pesa SMS is lower than the amount you requested.

⚖️ Only withdraw from licensed casinos

A fast withdrawal is only possible if the casino actually pays, and the only casinos you can hold to that are those licensed in your country.

🇰🇪 Kenya

The Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) replaced the old Betting Control and Licensing Board under the Gambling Control Act 2025. Its first licensing cycle under the new regulations began in July 2026. The Act requires operators to pay winnings within two days, to verify players’ identity, and to offer deposit, loss and session limits. Kenya’s 2026 regulations also require player funds to be kept separate from the operator’s own money, which protects your balance if an operator fails.

One complication: the GRA doesn’t publish a searchable list of licensed operators, Paybillke found on 19 October 2026. Look for the licence statement at the bottom of the casino’s Kenyan site. It should name the company, the GRA and a public gaming (“PG”) licence number. SportPesa, for example, shows a 2026 casino licence, GRAK/2026/PG056841, held by Standard Global East Africa Limited. 🇹🇿 Tanzania

The Gaming Board of Tanzania licenses online casinos separately from sports betting, with “OC” or “OCL” numbers, and publishes an online register of operators. Betway Tanzania (OC000000019), betPawa (OCL000000024) and Parimatch (OCL000000004) all hold online casino licences and pay out to M-Pesa.

Step by step: withdrawing in the app or on the website

1. Log in with the phone number you registered, which should be your own Safaricom M-Pesa line.
2. Check your withdrawable balance. Bonus funds and free bet credit usually can’t be withdrawn until the terms are met.
3. Open Withdraw and choose M-Pesa. Most Kenyan sites pay to your registered number automatically.
4. Enter the amount. Stay above the site’s minimum (KES 100 at Odibets, KES 200 at SportPesa) and within M-Pesa’s KES 250,000 per-transaction limit.
5. Review the deduction. ChampsBase found that 22Bet Kenya shows the tax in the cashier before you confirm.

Withdrawing by SMS (SportPesa)

SportPesa is one of the few sites where you can withdraw from any phone, without data or an app. Send WITHDRAW#amount to 79079 from your registered line, with no spaces (for example, WITHDRAW#1000). Paybillke reports that SportPesa withdrawals reach M-Pesa within minutes, and that the minimum withdrawal is KES 200.

🧾 What you’ll actually receive in Kenya

Two taxes affect your money in Kenya. A 5% excise duty is taken from every deposit, and a 5% withholding tax applies to every withdrawal. Law firm analysis by Afriwise of the Finance Act 2026, effective 1 July 2026, confirms the structure: betting and gaming payouts fall under the “withdrawals” definition, taxed at 5%, while the 20% withholding rate applies to lottery and prize competition winnings.

Because both taxes are percentages of money moved, depositing and withdrawing the same money costs you twice. For example, a KES 1,000 deposit that you withdraw again without betting comes back as about KES 902. Some websites still describe other rates, including a 20% tax on all winnings, so check the deduction shown in your casino account before you confirm a large withdrawal.

📏 M-Pesa limits that affect your withdrawal

Your casino’s limits are only half the picture. Safaricom’s own M-Pesa limits, as listed by Paybillke from Safaricom’s tariff sheet (updated August 2026), also apply:

The balance cap catches people out. If your wallet already holds KES 400,000, a KES 150,000 casino payout will fail. Move money out of your wallet first, or ask the casino whether it can pay part of the win to a bank account.

💵 Cashing out: M-Pesa agent and ATM fees

Hapa Kenya lists money coming into M-Pesa as free, so the casino’s payment reaches you without an extra charge on top of the tax. Turning it into cash does cost money. These are Safaricom’s 2026 withdrawal charges, as published by Paybillke (verified 29 August 2026):

At an ATM, the fee is KES 35 for KES 200–2,500, KES 69 for KES 2,501–5,000, KES 115 for KES 5,001–10,000 and KES 203 for KES 10,001–35,000. ATMs won’t dispense less than KES 200 or more than KES 35,000 per transaction. If you don’t need cash, leaving the money in M-Pesa and paying directly avoids these fees.

1. Register with your own Vodacom number, the one your M-Pesa wallet is on.
2. Verify your account with your national ID or passport before your first withdrawal.
3. Open Withdraw in the casino’s cashier and choose M-Pesa.
4. Enter the amount within the site’s limits.
5. Check the tax line showing what will be withheld from your winnings.

🧾 Tax on casino winnings in Tanzania

In Tanzania, tax is taken from your winnings, not your withdrawals. The operator calculates it, holds it back from your balance and sends it to the Tanzania Revenue Authority, according to 22Bet’s guide (updated 28 September 2026). That guide gives 15% for online casino winnings and 12% for sports betting. iGaming Times describes a single 15% rate for all gaming from 1 July 2026, so the casino rate is consistent across both sources, while the sports rate isn’t.

Most of our picks don’t charge a fee for OPay or PalmPay deposits. Afrik-Foot found no fees on OPay casino and betting payments, and Toffeeweb says PalmPay’s side of betting deposits is generally fee-free, with any charge more likely to come from a linked bank. Both caution that this can change, so check the amount on the confirmation screen before you enter your PIN.

In practice, your wallet tier is usually the tighter limit. A Tier 1 OPay account can’t send more than ₦50,000 a day, whatever the casino’s maximum.

Tanzania is the easiest market for testing a casino with very little money. betPawa accepts deposits from TZS 100 and stakes from TZS 1, and Parimatch from TZS 500. Every Airtel Money casino payment passes through two sets of limits: the casino’s, and your wallet’s. Your Airtel wallet’s per-transaction and daily limits can be lower than the casino’s maximum, so a large deposit may be declined even when the site would accept it.

🇺🇬 Uganda’s casino payment rules explained

Uganda ties online casino payments closely to tax collection. According to 22Bet’s October 2026 guide, Section 93A of the Tax Procedures Code (Amendment) Act 2025, in force since 1 July 2025, requires stakes and payouts to pass through a payment gateway licensed by the Bank of Uganda and linked to the Uganda Revenue Authority’s electronic system. Operators that don’t integrate face a penal tax of double the tax due or 5,500 currency points (UGX 110 million), whichever is higher.

For Airtel Money players, that has three practical effects:

2. Choose Make Payments, then Paybill (in some menus: Paybill and Till Payments, then Pay Bill).

Paying an M-Pesa paybill from Airtel Money is a cross-network payment, and Paybillke says it always carries a fee. These were Airtel Kenya’s published paybill fees when Paybillke checked them on 30 August 2026:

In September 2026, Airtel Kenya advertised 50% cashback on paybill transaction fees, credited to a Bonus Wallet that you can check through *334#, option 98. The sponsored announcement didn’t say whether betting paybills qualify, so don’t count on it.

Kenyan sites that accept Airtel Money

Remember that Kenya’s 2026 licence register hadn’t been published by mid-October 2026. The licence numbers above are from the 2025/26 register; check gra.go.ke before you deposit. Kenyan law also bans credit cards and cryptocurrency for gambling, which makes mobile money the main way to pay.

🇺🇬 How to deposit with Airtel Money in Uganda

In Uganda, most licensed sites send a payment prompt to your phone when you choose Airtel Money in the cashier. If the prompt doesn’t arrive, you can pay through USSD.

Method 1: the cashier prompt

1. Log in and go to Deposit, then choose Airtel Money.
2. Enter the amount and the Airtel number linked to your account. Some sites require it to match the number you registered with.
3. Approve the prompt with your Airtel Money PIN.
4. Wait for the SMS and check your balance.

Method 2: USSD on *185#

1. Dial *185# or open the MyAirtel app.
2. Choose Make Payments, then Pay Bill (some menus say “Payment” or “Goods & Services”).

5. Keep the transaction ID from the SMS until the money appears.

22Bet’s Uganda guide (October 2026) says deposits usually arrive within seconds of PIN approval, or up to five minutes when the network is busy, and to contact support if nothing appears after 30 minutes. It warns that USSD and payment prompts can be unstable at peak times, such as before big weekend matches, so deposit before kick-off.

Fees and taxes

• Airtel’s fee depends on the amount and wallet type and is shown on the summary screen before you enter your PIN. 22Bet charges no fee of its own.
• 15% withholding tax applies to net winnings from 1 July 2026, deducted by the bookmaker. LiveScore’s example: a UGX 10,000 stake returning UGX 50,000 incurs UGX 6,000 in tax.
• Cash-out levy: LiveScore reports a 0.5% excise duty when you cash out from your wallet at an agent, not when the casino pays you. Check the current rate before cashing out.

Mobile money is huge in Tanzania: SiGMA, citing the communications regulator, reported 71.7 million mobile money subscriptions by September 2025. 22Bet, Melbet, bet365 and Stake aren’t on the Gaming Board’s online register, so avoid them there.

Withdrawing is usually done from the casino’s side, not from your Airtel menu.

Kenya: a KES 1,000 deposit

You pay KES 1,000 to a casino paybill from Airtel Money. Airtel’s cross-network paybill fee for KES 501–1,000 is KES 13, so KES 1,013 leaves your wallet. Kenyan betting taxes are then deducted by the site, so check the amount credited on your account.

Uganda: tax on a winning bet

You stake UGX 10,000 and your bet returns UGX 50,000. Your net winnings are UGX 40,000, and the 15% withholding tax is UGX 6,000, so UGX 44,000 is credited. If you then cash out UGX 44,000 from your Airtel wallet at an agent, LiveScore reports a 0.5% excise duty, about UGX 220, plus any agent fee.

Tanzania: a small first deposit

Both Hollywoodbets and Betway show casino-style games, such as slots and crash games, on their South African sites, framed as bookmaker bets on “contingencies”. We don’t compare or recommend them, because their legal status is disputed:

• Section 11 of the National Gambling Act, 2004 prohibits unauthorised interactive games, including online casino.
• On 21 October 2025, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in the Supabets case that Gauteng-licensed bookmakers may not offer fixed-odds bets on casino games such as roulette.
• The National Gambling Board says the ruling applies to all bookmakers nationwide and has warned that winnings from interactive gambling will be confiscated.
• Hollywoodbets says the ruling “does not extend to our operations, nor to other provinces where we are duly licensed”, and Betway says it was a narrow interpretation of the Gauteng Act and not a ban on online betting.

Until the courts, the provinces or a new national gambling Bill settle the question, we think players are best served by sticking to sports and horse racing betting at either bookmaker.

🧾 Tax: none on your winnings

Recreational bettors don’t pay tax on betting winnings in South Africa, at either bookmaker. Bookmakers pay provincial gambling taxes instead, such as Gauteng’s 6.5% of gross betting revenue, and the Western Cape’s 3% tax plus a 3% betting levy on winning bets. A proposed 20% national tax on online gambling revenue would be paid by operators, not deducted from your winnings, and it wasn’t among the key proposals in the draft tax bills published on 30 July 2026.

Based on AfricaSoccer’s figures, a ten-leg accumulator at Hollywoodbets that would make R1,000 profit earns a 50% Multi Boost, adding R500. • Who regulates: the National Gambling Board oversees the sector and keeps national registers, while nine provincial boards license bookmakers, collect gambling taxes and supervise operators. At 31 March 2025, the Board counted 315 licensed bookmakers, retail and online combined.
• Online casino: Section 11 of the National Gambling Act, 2004 prohibits unauthorised interactive games, and a 2008 amendment that would have licensed online casino never came into operation. Penalties for illegal gambling can reach R10 million, ten years in prison, or both.
• Enforcement: the National Gambling Board has invited proposals for a system to block illegal gambling websites, announced a partnership with the Advertising Regulatory Board in September 2026 to monitor gambling adverts, and a national Illegal Gambling Task Team began operations in Limpopo in August 2026. Cabinet appointed a new National Gambling Board in September 2026.
• What’s next: the National Gambling Policy Council has resolved to fast-track a new national gambling Bill, which hadn’t passed by October 2026, and Gauteng says it’s amending its own law to regulate online betting.

🛡️ Licences: who’s ready for 2026?

Kenya’s Gambling Control Act 2025 replaced the Betting Control and Licensing Board with the Gambling Regulatory Authority. Old-regime licences remained valid until 24 September 2026, the High Court has been hearing a challenge to the new licence fees, and by mid-October 2026 the authority still hadn’t published a register of licences granted under the new rules. That affects all three brands.

• SportPesa: Milestone Games Limited held licence 0001193 on the 2025/26 register and now displays GRAK/2026/BK185751 on its Kenyan site, according to Paybillke, which read it on 19 October 2026. That’s the clearest 2026 disclosure of the three.
• Betika: Shop and Deliver Limited held BK 0001117 and PG 0001113 on the 2025/26 register. A court application reported by 254 News in October 2026 referred to new 2026 licence numbers for Betika while questioning how they were granted. Those are an applicant’s claims, not findings.
• Odibets: Kareco Holdings Limited held bookmaker, public gaming and public lottery licences (BK0001095, PG-0001096, PL-0001097) on the register ChampsBase checked. The same court application referred to new 2026 numbers for Odibets, which it said appeared on Odibets’ website on 8 October and had been removed by 9 October.

🏆 Jackpots compared

For many Kenyans, the jackpot is the main reason to choose a bookmaker.

SportPesa and Betika run near-identical 17-match jackpots, and the odds are the same: 3¹⁷ = 129,140,163 possible combinations, or about 1 in 129 million for a random ticket. SportPesa has paid the bigger record prize, including Kenya’s biggest-ever betting win. Odibets’ jackpots are shorter: Paybillke describes a 13-game jackpot (1,594,323 combinations) and a 7-game jackpot (2,187 combinations), with smaller prizes but much better odds of winning.

ChampsBase compared prices across five matches on the same day in August 2026, and the result is the most useful odds comparison we have for these three:

• SportPesa: deeper European football markets than Betika, according to Paybillke, with JengaBets for building your own bets, live betting and full or partial cash out.
• Betika: more comprehensive coverage of the Kenyan Premier League and lower divisions, Shikisha bet builder, cash out and around 20 sports.
• Odibets: a narrower menu: ChampsBase counted 13 sports, about 150 markets per football match and 132 football events on its count day. Odibets also runs OdiLeague virtual football and OdiTV streaming on selected matches.

None of the three relies on a big welcome bonus.

Read the conversion rules carefully. ChampsBase found that Odibets’ cashback and refunds only turn into withdrawable money after a six-selection accumulator with every leg at 2.50 or more, roughly a 244-to-1 shot. Betika’s free bets need odds of 4.99 or more and expire after 24 hours, according to The Game Haus.

In August 2026, Odibets added crash games and lightweight games built for low-end phones and expensive data through a partnership with aggregator QTech Games, iGaming Expert reported.

💳 M-Pesa payments compared

All three deduct the same taxes: 5% excise duty on each deposit and 5% withholding tax on each withdrawal. A KSh 1,000 deposit gives you KSh 950 to bet with, and a KSh 1,000 withdrawal lands as KSh 950. Some websites also mention a 20% withholding tax on all winnings from July 2026, but iGaming Times, which works from the statutes, lists the 20% rate only for lottery and prize competition payouts.

Odibets has one unusual rule: ChampsBase found an inactivity charge of KSh 200 a month, or 5% of the balance if that’s higher, after 365 days without activity. Don’t leave money in an account you’ve stopped using.

• SportPesa: Focus Gaming News reported that the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner fined SportPesa over a data breach in March 2025.
• Betika: in October 2025, the commissioner ordered Betika to pay KSh 250,000 in compensation after it demanded three months of M-Pesa statements from a customer closing his account, a request the commissioner called “intrusive, unnecessary and disproportionate”.
• Betika and Odibets: 2026 reporting by 254 News and iGaming Expert linked both brands to allegations about the use of leaked Safaricom subscriber data, after the High Court ruled against Safaricom on 13 May 2026. The court’s judgment was against Safaricom, not the bookmakers, and no finding has been reported against either brand.

None of these rule a brand out, but they’re a reminder to share only the documents you need to, and to use Kenya’s Data Protection Act 2019 rights if a request seems excessive.

SportPesa lets you bet, deposit and withdraw by SMS on 79079, or use USSD on *955#. Odibets also offers SMS and USSD routes, and Betika offers Betika Lite for low-end smartphones.

Scenario 4: you need help fast

Odibets’ phone line answered in under 15 seconds in testing, and it also offers WhatsApp and Telegram. Keep your M-Pesa transaction code ready, whichever bookmaker you contact.

🧮 Worked example: what taxes cost you

You deposit KSh 2,000, so KSh 1,900 reaches your wallet after the 5% excise. You win and withdraw KSh 3,000, so KSh 2,850 reaches M-Pesa after the 5% withholding tax. Across the round trip, KSh 250 goes in tax. The amount is the same at all three bookmakers, so fewer, planned deposits matter more than which brand you pick.

At Odibets, ChampsBase also saw how deductions affect casino wins: a KSh 200 Aviator stake cashed out at 4.7x returned KSh 940 gross and KSh 792 after deduction.

• Betika: The Game Haus reports that free bets need odds of 4.99 or more and expire after 24 hours, and that only the winnings from a free bet can become withdrawable.
• SportPesa: without a conventional welcome bonus, there’s nothing to convert. Aviator free-bet “rains” have their own terms on SportPesa’s site.

The lesson is the same at all three: treat promotional credit as a small extra, not as money in the bank.

📈 Market position

Betika and SportPesa are Kenya’s two biggest betting brands by public interest. Blask search data for September 2026, cited by iGaming Afrika, gave Betika a 29.1% share of Kenyan betting brand searches, with SportPesa second. Odibets is smaller but growing beyond Kenya, with operations in Ghana and, from 2026, Tanzania.

Size isn’t everything: in ChampsBase’s same-day price test, the smaller Odibets matched Betika on value and beat SportPesa. None of the three offers a big deposit-match welcome bonus in October 2026, so this category is closer than you might expect.

Reviewers quote different maximums for Betway’s Win Boost, so check the percentage shown on your betslip.

⚽ Football markets and odds

Football is what most Nigerians bet on, so this is the most important category for many readers.

Market counts come from different testers on different days, so treat them as indications rather than an exact ranking. The margin figures are the most useful comparison we have: on the fixtures ChampsBase measured, both Betway (5.5%) and SportyBet (5.1%) priced more sharply than Bet9ja (7.2% and 6.1%). ChampsBase also found SportyBet’s price best or joint-best on three of five selections against three other Nigerian-licensed bookmakers, and called its football catalogue the deepest it found in Nigeria, with 256 top competitions listed on one day.

Bet9ja’s strength is local football: it’s been an official partner of the NPFL since 2022 and covers more than 100 football leagues. It also had the most noticeable in-play lag in testing, two to four seconds under heavy load on 5G.

Limits

If you bet big, maximum payouts matter. SportyBet has the highest ceiling, at ₦200 million per bet. Bet9ja’s is ₦100 million per bet, or ₦130 million on listed top events, with a ₦300 million daily ceiling. Betway caps winnings at ₦25 million per single and ₦50 million per multiple, and slips loaded from a booking code at ₦1 million.

All three are Lagos-licensed, so all three deduct a 5% withholding tax from net winnings, which Lagos directed operators to apply from February 2026. You’ll need your NIN during verification, and the tax deducted can be used as a credit in your own tax filings. The way it’s shown differs:
