Betway vs Bet9ja vs SportyBet (2026): Which Nigerian Bookmaker Is Best?
Betway vs Bet9ja vs SportyBet is the comparison most Nigerian bettors end up making. They’re three of the biggest names in the country: Statisense ranked SportyBet Nigeria’s fourth most-visited website in July 2026, and Blask data from the same month put SportyBet and Bet9ja first and second by brand strength. All three hold Lagos licences for online sports betting and online casino, all accept deposits from ₦100, and all deduct the same 5% Lagos withholding tax.
So the differences are in the detail: welcome offers, accumulator tools, odds, payout speed, apps and support. In this head-to-head for October 2026, we compare them category by category, using the Lagos register and independent tests, and pick a winner for each type of bettor.

🛡️ Licences and ownership
All three are licensed by the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority, which has been Nigeria’s leading regulator since the Supreme Court ruled on 22 November 2024 that gambling is a matter for the states.
Bet9ja: KC Gaming Networks Limited is on the register for Online Sports Betting/Online Casino from 3 October 2026 to 2 October 2027, the longest current licence of the three. Bet9ja launched in 2013 and is Nigerian-owned, with co-founders Ayo Ojuroye (chief executive) and Kunle Soname (chairman).
Betway: Digi Bay Limited holds Lagos licence code LSLGA/OP/OSB/BW221017, verified by ChampsBase, and a national NLRC permit. When we checked the register in October 2026, the Betway entry listed a licence period from 30 November 2026 to 29 November 2027, a start date still in the future, which may be an advance renewal. Its parent, Super Group, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
SportyBet: Marawin Limited is on the register for Online Sports Betting/Online Casino from 5 January 2026 to 4 January 2027, so its renewal is due soonest. SportyBet belongs to Sporty Group, a London-headquartered company that also runs SportyTV.
ℹ️ Verdict: Bet9ja has the clearest, longest current licence. Betway has the most transparent ownership. SportyBet’s licence is current but up for renewal in January 2027, so check the register if you’re reading this after that date.
🎁 Welcome offers compared
None of the three offers a big deposit-match welcome bonus in October 2026, so this category is closer than you might expect.

Betway: recent reviews from Toffeeweb and BettingExpert describe the ₦1,000 pack. Older reviews describe bigger matches, so check the Promotions tab before you deposit.
Bet9ja: October 2026 reviews from Toffeeweb, AceOdds and Goal all describe the ₦2,500 free bet. None of them mentions the 100% first-deposit bonus Bet9ja has offered in the past.
SportyBet: ChampsBase found no welcome bonus in August 2026, and a SportyBet support agent confirmed there was none. The “150% welcome bonus” advertised on some websites wasn’t on any SportyBet page.
ℹ️ Verdict: Bet9ja wins narrowly with the largest free bet and the simplest qualifying bet. Betway’s pack adds casino extras. SportyBet doesn’t compete here, but it doesn’t need to: its value is in everyday odds and accumulator bonuses.
🔁 Promotions and accumulator tools
For regular bettors, ongoing promotions matter far more than a one-off welcome offer. All three are built around accumulators.

Bet9ja has the widest toolkit, and Cut 1 is one of the most popular features in Nigerian betting. SportyBet’s Multi Bet Bonus has the highest ceiling, at 1,000%, and starts from just two selections. Betway’s Win Boost and 1Up/2Up/3Up early payouts are solid, and its Free Bet Club rewards weekly activity. Reviewers quote different maximums for Betway’s Win Boost, so check the percentage shown on your betslip.
ℹ️ Verdict: Bet9ja for the broadest set of accumulator tools; SportyBet if you want the biggest boost percentage.

Market counts come from different testers on different days, so treat them as indications rather than an exact ranking. The margin figures are the most useful comparison we have: on the fixtures ChampsBase measured, both Betway (5.5%) and SportyBet (5.1%) priced more sharply than Bet9ja (7.2% and 6.1%). ChampsBase also found SportyBet’s price best or joint-best on three of five selections against three other Nigerian-licensed bookmakers, and called its football catalogue the deepest it found in Nigeria, with 256 top competitions listed on one day.
Bet9ja’s strength is local football: it’s been an official partner of the NPFL since 2022 and covers more than 100 football leagues. It also had the most noticeable in-play lag in testing, two to four seconds under heavy load on 5G.
ℹ️ Verdict: SportyBet for football depth and odds, with Betway close behind on major European matches. Bet9ja for NPFL fans who want a local brand.

Bet9ja wins on virtuals, which grew out of its shops and remain hugely popular. SportyBet’s casino is the smallest, and ChampsBase found that its casino winnings were taxed at 20%.
⚠️ None of the three publishes RTP figures for its games, and casino games, crash games and virtuals are fast and random. Set a separate, smaller budget for them.

Payout speed in independent tests
SportyBet: in ChampsBase’s August 2026 tests, OPay withdrawals arrived in 43 and 47 seconds. The first bank withdrawal of each session took 22 and 38 minutes, with later bank withdrawals arriving in about a minute. All six payouts were free.
Bet9ja: ChampsBase’s three bank withdrawals to GTBank arrived in 55, 67 and 47 minutes, about 56 minutes on average, with no fees and the full amounts received.
Betway: ChampsBase’s ₦10,000 bank withdrawal took about 2 hours 50 minutes, without a fee. Toffeeweb reports OPay and PalmPay payouts within minutes for verified accounts, and bank payouts from 15 minutes to 24 hours.
Limits
If you bet big, maximum payouts matter. SportyBet has the highest ceiling, at ₦200 million per bet. Bet9ja’s is ₦100 million per bet, or ₦130 million on listed top events, with a ₦300 million daily ceiling. Betway caps winnings at ₦25 million per single and ₦50 million per multiple, and slips loaded from a booking code at ₦1 million.
ℹ️ Verdict: SportyBet for the fastest wallet payouts; Bet9ja for the widest range of deposit methods; Betway if you want OPay and PalmPay withdrawals with live chat back-up.
🧾 Tax: the same 5% everywhere
All three are Lagos-licensed, so all three deduct a 5% withholding tax from net winnings, which Lagos directed operators to apply from February 2026. You’ll need your NIN during verification, and the tax deducted can be used as a credit in your own tax filings. The way it’s shown differs:
Bet9ja deducts the tax once, when the bet settles, and shows it as a separate line. ChampsBase recorded ₦240 deducted on a ₦4,800 profit.
SportyBet shows your gross return on the betslip, not the net. On a ₦1,000 bet at 3.20, the slip showed ₦3,200 but ₦3,090 was credited.
Betway applies 5% to net sports winnings and, according to ChampsBase, a higher rate to casino winnings.

🔍 The three brands in depth
Bet9ja: Nigeria’s home-grown leader
8.8/10
Bet9ja launched on 10 September 2013 and has grown into one of Nigeria’s most visible brands. Wikipedia records that it was the headline sponsor of a Big Brother Naija season in 2019, became an official partner of the Nigeria Professional Football League in 2022, and in April 2020 was ranked by Alexa as the third most-visited website in Nigeria, behind only Google and YouTube. In July 2026, Blask data cited by Focus Gaming News gave it a 26.63% share of brand strength in Nigeria, second only to SportyBet.
At a January 2026 strategy retreat reported by ThisDay, chief executive Ayo Ojuroye told staff that “Bet9ja is not here to compete; we are here to make impact”. In product terms, its strengths are breadth and familiarity: a sportsbook with more than 100 football leagues, a casino, eight virtual leagues, the 49ja numbers game and Super9ja, all in one account, with a cashier that covers almost every naira payment method.
✅ Strengths
✅ Licence to October 2027
✅ Cut 1, 1UP, betFREEZE, betBOOM
✅ Widest naira cashier
✅ Popular virtuals
⚠️ Weaknesses
⚠️ Support closes at 9pm
⚠️ Slightly higher margins on top matches
⚠️ Streaming needs a ₦200 balance
Betway: the international heavyweight
8.6/10
Betway Nigeria is part of Super Group, which also owns Betway in Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania. Its Nigerian business is run by Digi Bay Limited under a Lagos licence and a national NLRC permit. In June 2026, Super Group named Don Jazzy, founder of Mavin Records, as Betway’s brand ambassador in Nigeria, describing the deal as a significant step in expanding its Nigerian footprint.
Betway’s product is the most “international” of the three: a casino of more than 4,000 games, Build a Bet with up to 10 outcomes, live streaming on selected competitions, eSports and virtuals, and a strong set of support channels. Its welcome pack is small, and ChampsBase found a few paperwork issues, such as pages with content for other countries, but its tested payouts were fee-free.
✅ Strengths
✅ NYSE-listed owner
✅ Largest casino of the three
✅ Live chat and WhatsApp
✅ Competitive margins on major football
⚠️ Weaknesses
⚠️ Small welcome pack
⚠️ Lowest payout caps of the three
⚠️ Thinner NPFL coverage
SportyBet: the mobile football specialist
8.3/10
SportyBet belongs to Sporty Group, a London-headquartered sports and entertainment technology company that also runs SportyTV, which secured free-to-air rights in Nigeria to 34 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In July 2026, Statisense ranked SportyBet Nigeria’s fourth most-visited website, with 36.28 million visits, and Blask gave it a 41.34% share of brand strength in Nigeria, the highest of any betting brand.
Its appeal is focus. SportyBet does football on mobile better than almost anyone: 256 top competitions on one test day, sharp prices, full, partial and automatic cash out at no cost, a ₦10 minimum ticket and a Multi Bet Bonus of up to 1,000%. The trade-offs are no welcome bonus, a small casino and deposit limits that you have to request from support.
✅ Strengths
✅ Deepest football catalogue
✅ OPay payouts in seconds
✅ Best-rated app
✅ ₦200m payout ceiling
⚠️ Weaknesses
⚠️ No welcome bonus
⚠️ Limits only through support
⚠️ Licence renewal due January 2027

🇳🇬 Nigeria’s betting market in 2026
The Betway vs Bet9ja vs SportyBet contest plays out in one of Africa’s biggest betting markets. According to figures cited by the News Agency of Nigeria in 2026:
roughly 18.8 million Nigerians tried betting in 2024;
Statista estimated sports betting revenue at about US$590.58 million in 2025, projected to reach about US$707 million by 2029;
football attracts an estimated 75% to 85% of all sports wagers;
nearly 90% of bets are reportedly placed on mobile devices;
OPay overtook regular bank transfers as a key way to fund betting in 2024.
Those numbers explain why all three brands put football, mobile apps and wallet payments at the centre of their products, and why fast OPay payouts and strong accumulator tools are the battleground.

🧪 Real-world scenarios
Scenario 1: a weekend Premier League accumulator
You place a ₦1,000 five-leg accumulator on Saturday’s Premier League games. At SportyBet, the Multi Bet Bonus applies from two legs and its prices were sharpest on the fixtures ChampsBase measured. At Bet9ja, a five-leg slip qualifies for the Multiple Boost and for Cut 1, so if one leg loses you can still get a reduced payout. At Betway, Win Boost applies, and Bet Saver can return something on losing multiples. If you value a safety net, Bet9ja’s Cut 1 is the standout; if you value the best price and the bigger boost, SportyBet.
Scenario 2: you need your winnings today
You’ve won ₦20,000 and want it in your account quickly. SportyBet‘s OPay withdrawals arrived in under a minute in testing. Bet9ja‘s bank withdrawals took about an hour. Betway pays to OPay and PalmPay within minutes for verified accounts, according to Toffeeweb, though ChampsBase’s bank withdrawal took nearly three hours. In every case, verify your account before you need to withdraw.
Scenario 3: you play casino and Aviator
Betway has by far the biggest casino, and its welcome pack includes 10 free Aviator flights. Bet9ja’s casino tested well for loading speed and live dealer quality, and SportyBet has its own crash game, Sporty Jet. But remember that ChampsBase found SportyBet’s casino winnings taxed at 20%, and Betway’s at a higher rate than sports.
Scenario 4: you have a problem late in the evening
Bet9ja’s phone lines close at 9pm, and its written messages can take up to 48 hours. Betway offers live chat and WhatsApp, and SportyBet has live chat, though it was slow in testing. If having several ways to reach support matters to you, Betway is the best choice.
🧮 Worked example: what you actually receive
You stake ₦1,000 on a single at odds of 3.20 and it wins. Your gross return is ₦3,200, and your profit is ₦2,200. All three bookmakers deduct 5% of the profit, ₦110, so you receive ₦3,090. The amount is the same everywhere; what differs is whether the betslip shows it up front (Bet9ja shows the tax as a line item; SportyBet’s slip shows the gross figure).
Now take a five-leg accumulator where each leg has a 70% chance of winning. The chance that all five win is only about 17% (0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 ≈ 0.17). Boosts and Cut 1 improve what you get when you win or nearly win, but they don’t make long accumulators likely to win.
🔀 Should you open accounts at all three?
Holding more than one account lets you compare odds and promotions, and that can make sense: on the fixtures ChampsBase measured, the best price wasn’t always at the same bookmaker. But it also makes it harder to keep track of spending. If you hold several accounts:
Set a deposit limit at each one, and a single total monthly budget across all of them.
Keep a simple record of deposits and withdrawals at every bookmaker.
Consider Lagos’s SafePlay tool if you want to take a break from all Lagos-licensed sites at once.
🧮 Worked example: unlocking each welcome offer
Betway: to unlock the ₦1,000 free bet, 10 free spins and 10 Aviator flights, you wager ₦4,000 in total on qualifying bets: sports slips of five or more legs at total odds of 3.00 or more, or crash-game bets cashed out at 1.5x or higher. That could be four ₦1,000 five-leg accumulators. Soccernet adds that the casino part carries 30x wagering within 30 days.
Bet9ja: you place one first bet of at least ₦1,000 and receive the ₦2,500 free bet once it settles. If the rollover works as Toffeeweb describes, you then wager 10 times the bonus, ₦25,000, on slips at total odds of 3.00 or more within 30 days, before bonus winnings can be withdrawn.
SportyBet: there’s nothing to unlock. Your first deposit goes straight into betting, and the Multi Bet Bonus applies automatically to qualifying multiples.
Neither welcome offer is large enough to decide which bookmaker you join. Judge them on everyday value instead.

🧪 How we compared them
This Betway vs Bet9ja vs SportyBet comparison draws on our individual reviews of each bookmaker, published in October 2026. Licence details come from the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority register. Test results come from independent reviewers, chiefly ChampsBase’s funded tests, plus Toffeeweb, Soccernet, BettingExpert, AceOdds and Goal, and app details from the app stores. Where sources disagreed, for example on Betway’s minimum withdrawal or the maximum Win Boost, we left the detail out. Test times describe individual sessions, so your experience may differ.

Watch out for
Betway
NYSE-listed owner; fee-free tested payout; most support channels
Register entry dates start on 30 Nov 2026; some pages contain content for other countries; dormant balances under ₦50,000
Bet9ja
Longest current licence; tested payouts in about an hour; operating since 2013
Support hours; in-app ID camera problems; a reported Enugu tax dispute that Bet9ja denies
SportyBet
Fee-free tested payouts; stable app; self-exclusion that works
Licence renewal due January 2027; limits only through support; slow first bank payout of a session
All three are on the Lagos register, so you have a regulator to complain to. That isn’t true of sites on Lagos’s illegal operators list, which named 44 companies in September 2026, including Stake and bet365.
⚖️ Betting law in Nigeria in brief
Since the Supreme Court’s ruling of 22 November 2024, the National Lottery Act applies only in the Federal Capital Territory, and the states regulate gambling. The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority is the leading regulator, and more than twenty states have joined the Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria. In 2026, Lagos High Court judgments confirmed that operators serving Lagos residents need a Lagos licence, and Lagos launched a homologation programme requiring games and platforms to be tested by an authorised lab. You must be 18 or older to bet.

🧘 Responsible gambling in Nigeria
Betting should be entertainment, never a way to make money. Only stake what you can afford to lose, and stop if it stops being fun.
Warning signs
Thinking about betting all the time or planning the next slip.
Chasing losses or borrowing money to bet.
Opening new accounts to get around limits.
Hiding betting from family or lying about how much you spend.
Where to get help
Use each bookmaker’s deposit limits and self-exclusion, and Lagos’s SafePlay tool to self-exclude from all Lagos-licensed platforms. Gamble Alert, a Nigerian NGO, offers free gambling support (info@gamblealert.org), and GamblePause Initiative Africa offers free, confidential support including help with self-exclusion. You can find more services at Find A Helpline.
🔞 18+ only. Never let anyone under 18 use your betting account or payment methods.

On the fixtures ChampsBase measured in 2026, SportyBet’s margin was 5.1% against Bet9ja’s 6.1%, and Betway’s 5.5% against Bet9ja’s 7.2%. Those are single-fixture comparisons, but both suggest Bet9ja is usually slightly more expensive on major football.
Which pays out fastest?
SportyBet: its OPay withdrawals arrived in under a minute in ChampsBase’s tests. Bet9ja’s bank withdrawals averaged about 56 minutes, and Betway’s bank withdrawal took about 2 hours 50 minutes, although Betway’s OPay and PalmPay payouts take minutes for verified accounts, according to Toffeeweb.
Which has the highest maximum payout?

🏁 Final verdict: Betway vs Bet9ja vs SportyBet
There’s no single winner, because the three are good at different things. Bet9ja is our best all-rounder: the longest current Lagos licence, the widest naira cashier, Cut 1 and the Multiple Boost, popular virtuals and a ₦2,500 welcome free bet. SportyBet is the best for football bettors on mobile, with the sharpest prices we saw, a 1,000% Multi Bet Bonus, the best-rated app and payouts to OPay in seconds. Betway is the best for casino players and anyone who values support and corporate transparency, with 4,000+ games, live chat and WhatsApp, and an NYSE-listed owner.
If you only want one account, choose Bet9ja. If football odds are what matter most, choose SportyBet. If you play casino or want the most ways to reach support, choose Betway. Whichever you pick, verify your account early, set a deposit limit and make a small test withdrawal before you bet bigger.
