🏢 Betika’s story: from SMS bets to a pan-African brand

According to Wikipedia, Betika was founded in April 2016 and first took sports bets by SMS only, adding USSD betting soon after and launching online betting in August 2016. It’s headquartered in Nairobi, has about 500 employees, and is owned by Shop and Deliver Limited, a company with Kenyan shareholders. Its chief executive is Mutua Mutava.

Key moments

• November 2018: Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho became Betika’s brand ambassador.
• 2018–2021: title sponsor of Kenya’s National Super League, the second division.
• 2019: launched its community programme, Betika Na Community, supporting football, cricket, athletics, motorsport and other sports.

Betika has also backed Kenyan Premier League clubs, including AFC Leopards, Police FC and Sofapaka, and rugby sevens, rally and rallycross. In September 2026, Blask data cited by iGaming Afrika gave Betika a 29.1% share of Kenyan betting brand searches, the largest of any operator.

Betika Kenya is operated by Shop and Deliver Limited. On the 2025/26 register, the most recent list published by Kenya’s regulator, it held bookmaker licence BK 0001117 and public gaming licence PG 0001113.

Kenya’s 2026 licensing transition

Kenya’s Gambling Control Act 2025 replaced the Betting Control and Licensing Board with the Gambling Regulatory Authority, and every operator has had to apply for a licence under new 2026 regulations. That process has been turbulent:

• 7 August 2026: the High Court suspended the new, much higher licence fees and capital requirements in a challenge by petitioners who argue the rules were passed without public participation, iGaming Expert reported.
• 24 August 2026: the court varied that order and allowed the GRA to collect the new fees while the case continues, according to Business Daily.
• 24 September 2026: licences issued under the old regime remained valid until this date, according to the GRA’s notice cited by iGaming Times.
• Mid-October 2026: the GRA still hadn’t published a register of licences granted under the new rules, and the court case was unresolved.

In October 2026, 254 News reported on a court application that referred to new 2026 licence numbers for Betika, issued in early October, while questioning how they were granted. Those are an applicant’s claims, not court findings, and the numbers haven’t appeared on a published GRA register.

Is there a Betika welcome bonus?

Not a standing one. The Game Haus, updated in October 2026, says there’s no current Betika welcome bonus for new players in Kenya; instead, promotions are open to new and existing customers once your account is set up. Other websites describe small sign-up free bets that differ from one site to the next, so we can’t confirm any of them. Open the Promotions page after you register to see what’s live.

The KES 200 million winner

In December 2022, NTV Kenya reported that Eli Kipruto Rotich, a 22-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, won KES 200 million on the Betika Grand Jackpot by predicting all 17 matches. It was the first time the jackpot had been won. After 20% withholding tax, he was expected to receive about KES 160 million. Wikipedia also records a later winner, Moses Kiprono, reported in February 2023.

How hard is it to win?

With three possible results per match, there are 3¹⁷ = 129,140,163 possible combinations for 17 games. If you guessed at random, your chance of getting all 17 right would be about 1 in 129 million. Even a well-informed punter who’s right 60% of the time on each match has only about a 1 in 5,900 chance (0.6¹⁷). That’s why jackpots should be a small, fun weekly stake, never a plan.

⚽ Betika sportsbook

Football is at the centre of Betika’s sportsbook, with around 20 sports in total, according to The Game Haus. Kenyan comparison site Paybillke found that Betika covers the Kenyan Premier League and lower Kenyan divisions more comprehensively than SportPesa, although SportPesa has deeper European football markets. It also reported that Betika’s platform handled Saturday Premier League traffic better.

The Game Haus describes Betika’s odds as slightly above average, with tennis and in-play prices as strengths. If you bet mainly on the Premier League or Champions League, compare prices with another licensed bookmaker.

🎰 Betika casino and Aviator

Betika also offers casino games, crash games and virtuals under its public gaming licence. The Game Haus lists slots from providers including Pragmatic Play, live casino from Evolution, with roulette, blackjack, baccarat and game shows such as Crazy Time, plus keno. Aviator offers were among the highlights when Betika launched its Google Play app in 2023, and virtual games run around the clock.

💳 Betika deposits and withdrawals (M-Pesa)

Betika is built around M-Pesa. You deposit through paybill 290290, and winnings are paid back to the Safaricom number registered on your account.

How to deposit with M-Pesa

1. Open M-Pesa. Choose Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill.
2. Enter business number 290290.
3. Enter the account. Paybillke says you can use “BETIKA” or your registered Safaricom number, written without spaces or a plus sign.
4. Enter the amount and your M-Pesa PIN.
5. Check the confirmation SMS. The recipient should read “BETIKA KENYA”. If it shows another name, the paybill may be a scam.

Paybillke reports that deposits usually reach your Betika wallet within one to five minutes. If yours hasn’t arrived after five minutes, contact Betika with your M-Pesa transaction code. Kenyan reviewers also list Airtel Money for deposits.

Withdrawals

Withdrawals go back to the M-Pesa line registered on your account, and Paybillke reports that they usually arrive within minutes. If a withdrawal stalls, the usual causes are incomplete verification, an amount below the minimum, an unmet bonus condition or a temporary system delay. If nothing arrives within an hour, contact support with the transaction details.

How Kenyan taxes affect your money

Kenyan law takes tax at both ends of your betting, and Betika deducts it automatically:

Because both taxes apply, a KES 1,000 deposit that you withdraw without betting would come back as about KES 902 (KES 950 credited, then KES 47.50 withheld on withdrawal). Deposit only what you plan to bet, and avoid moving money in and out often.

Android

Betika’s Android app is on Google Play, published by Shop and Deliver Limited, and Paybillke recommends that route. It’s about 20 MB, and updates install automatically. You can also download an APK from betika.com if Google Play isn’t available on your phone. Only download it from Betika’s own site, as third-party APK sites can carry malware.

iPhone

Paybillke reports that Betika Kenya has no app on the App Store. Instead, open betika.com in Safari, tap Share and choose Add to Home Screen. The web app handles deposits, withdrawals, live betting and jackpots.

Betika Lite

Betika Lite is a stripped-down version of the site for slow connections and older phones. It’s designed for 2G and 3G connections, and AfricaSoccer notes that the Lite version of Betika’s Ghanaian site leaves out heavier features such as the casino and live streaming. If data costs or patchy coverage are a problem, it’s one of Betika’s most useful features.

When you contact support about a payment, give your M-Pesa transaction code first; it’s the fastest way to have a missing deposit or withdrawal traced. Report a fake paybill or suspicious SMS to Safaricom on 100.

🧭 Betika responsible gambling tools

Betika lets you manage your play from your account. Paybillke reports that you can set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits in the Responsible Gaming section of My Account, and that raising a limit is subject to a cooling-off period of 24 to 72 hours, so you can’t increase it on impulse. Kenya’s Gambling Control Act also requires operators to give players deposit, loss and session limits.

2. Choose a limit period. Daily, weekly or monthly.
3. Enter an amount you can afford to lose. Lower limits apply straight away; increases wait for the cooling-off period.

⚖️ Betting law in Kenya and what it means for Betika users

Kenya replaced its old betting law with the Gambling Control Act 2025, which came into force on 26 August 2025. According to iGaming Times, the Act and its regulations:

• replace the Betting Control and Licensing Board with the Gambling Regulatory Authority;
• require at least 30% Kenyan ownership of licensed operators;
• set a minimum online stake of KES 20;
• require winnings to be paid within two days;
• ban credit cards and cryptocurrency for gambling;
• require KYC checks before an account is activated and before the first deposit;
• require operators to offer deposit, loss and session limits.

For Betika users, the practical effect is that you’ll verify your identity before you play, pay with M-Pesa or another local mobile method, and have the right to set limits on your account.

Taxes

From 1 July 2026, the Finance Act widened the 5% excise duty on gambling deposits, and a 5% withholding tax applies to amounts paid out to players. Some websites also describe a 20% withholding tax on all betting winnings from July 2026, but iGaming Times, which works from the statutes, lists the 20% rate only for lottery and prize competition payouts, so we haven’t included it in the table above.

🔐 Betika and data protection

Betika has faced two separate data-protection issues. Here’s what’s been decided and what’s only alleged.

Decided: an excessive account-closure demand

In 2025, a Betika customer complained to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner after Betika asked for his national ID and three months of M-Pesa statements to close his account. Focus Gaming News reported in October 2025 that the commissioner found the ID request justified under anti-money laundering law but the M-Pesa statements “intrusive, unnecessary and disproportionate”, and ordered Betika to pay KES 250,000 in compensation and delete his data. Betika had 30 days to appeal.

Alleged: leaked Safaricom data

On 13 May 2026, the High Court ruled in Constitutional Petition E095 of 2026 that Safaricom had violated subscribers’ rights after employees extracted subscriber data over several years and supplied it to third-party betting firms. 254 News reported in August 2026 that a complainant had asked the GRA to suspend the licences of Betika and another bookmaker, citing a police forensic report that allegedly named them as buyers, and that the GRA confirmed it was investigating betting firms over the alleged data purchases.

These are allegations, not findings against Betika. The court’s judgment was against Safaricom, and 254 News reported that the firms named didn’t respond to its questions. We’ll update this review if the GRA announces an outcome.

🏛️ Payout disputes and the courts

Betika has also been tested in court over payouts. In March 2025, Business Daily reported that the Court of Appeal rejected a punter’s second appeal in a KES 99 million payout dispute with Betika, ruling that betting litigation under the old Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act ended at the High Court. The case is a reminder to read the betting rules, particularly on void and postponed matches, and to keep screenshots of your slips.

The 2022 jackpot shows how postponements work in practice: one of Eli Kipruto Rotich’s 17 games was postponed, and its outcome was decided by a public draw, which went his way.

Betika is a long-established, legitimate Kenyan bookmaker, but there are open questions you should know about.

Wikipedia lists Betika in ten countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda and Malawi. Each runs on its own licence and site. These are the two we’ve checked:

🇬🇭 Ghana

Betika is on the Gaming Commission of Ghana register for sports betting and online casino, with a licence running from 1 January to 31 December 2026, like every Ghanaian licence. Ghanaian reviewers highlight a 400% ACCA Bonus on accumulator winnings, mobile money payments by MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo from GHS 1, and USSD betting without data. There’s no tax on winnings in Ghana, since the 10% withholding tax was repealed with effect from 2 April 2025. 🇺🇬 Uganda

In Uganda, Betika is run by Sportive Limited, which appears on the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board’s 2026 list, according to iGaming Times. ChampsBase tested Airtel payouts there, and Betika supports MTN and Airtel mobile money. Uganda introduced a 15% withholding tax on winnings from 1 July 2026.

Betika’s Grand Jackpot and SportPesa’s Mega Jackpot are Kenya’s two best-known football jackpots, and they look similar on paper.

The maths is the same for both: 17 matches with three outcomes each give 129,140,163 possible combinations. Neither jackpot is “easier” to win; the main differences are the prize pool at the time you play and the size of the bonus tiers. If you play both, set one weekly budget that covers both tickets.

🪪 Verifying your Betika account

Under Kenya’s Gambling Control Act, operators must check your identity before your account is activated and before your first deposit, and they can check again before paying out. In practice, that means your national ID and the Safaricom number registered in your own name. The data commissioner’s 2025 decision confirmed that asking for a national ID is justified under anti-money laundering law, but that a blanket demand for three months of M-Pesa statements to close an account was excessive.

• Use your own SIM. Your account and payouts are tied to the number you register with.
• Verify early. Unverified accounts are the most common reason withdrawals stall.
• Know your rights. Under Kenya’s Data Protection Act 2019, you can ask for your data to be deleted when you close your account, and complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner if a request seems excessive.

Example 1: the Lost Multibet Freebet

You place a KES 100 cash multibet with 10 selections. Nine win and one loses. Under the terms reported by The Game Haus, a slip of 8–19 games that loses by one selection returns 100% of the stake as a free bet, so you’d receive a KES 100 free bet. You’d then need to use it on selections at odds of 4.99 or more within 24 hours.

Example 2: the real cost of moving money

You deposit KES 2,000, so KES 1,900 reaches your wallet after the 5% excise. You win and withdraw KES 3,000, so KES 2,850 reaches M-Pesa after the 5% withholding tax. Across the round trip, KES 250 went in tax. Fewer, planned deposits keep that cost down.

Example 3: why more legs aren’t better

Ten selections that each have a 70% chance of winning combine to under a 3% chance that all ten win (0.7¹⁰ ≈ 0.028). The Lost Multibet Freebet softens near-misses, but it doesn’t change how unlikely long slips are to win.

🏢 Who owns SportyBet?

SportyBet is the betting brand of Sporty Group, which describes itself as a global sports and entertainment technology company. SBC News reports that the group is headquartered in London and focuses heavily on Africa, with growing interests in South America, where it bought the Brazilian football channel Nosso Futebol in 2025. SBC also notes a regional partnership for Africa between SportyBet and Manchester City, signed in 2023.

Sporty Group has expanded well beyond betting in Africa:

• SportyTV: in June 2026, it secured free-to-air rights to 34 of the 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, including the opening match and the final, according to Inside World Football.
• SportyFM: Ghana’s first 24-hour sports radio station, which won “Emerging Brand of the Year” at the 2025 Ghana Business Awards, Modern Ghana reported.

Each country’s SportyBet site is run by a locally licensed company, which is the entity you deal with as a customer. That’s why the licence, terms, payment methods and support numbers differ by country.

🛡️ SportyBet licences in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya

🇳🇬 Nigeria: Lagos licence

Since the Supreme Court ruled on 22 November 2024 that gambling is a matter for the states, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority has become Nigeria’s leading regulator. Its register lists Marawin Limited, trading as SportyBet, under Online Sports Betting/Online Casino, with a licence period from 5 January 2026 to 4 January 2027. ChampsBase confirmed the same entry in October 2026.

SportyBet’s footer also cites a national licence number, 0001014, from the National Lottery Regulatory Commission. ChampsBase couldn’t confirm it because the commission’s portal timed out, and since the 2024 judgment, the National Lottery Act applies only in the Federal Capital Territory. The Lagos licence is the one that matters most for players.

🇬🇭 Ghana: Gaming Commission of Ghana

In Ghana, betting is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). When we checked the commission’s register in October 2026, SportyBet was listed with a sports betting and online casino licence. As with every operator on the register, the licence was issued on 1 January 2026 and expires on 31 December 2026, because Ghanaian licences are renewed every year. The register doesn’t publish licence numbers.

🇰🇪 Kenya: a licence in transition

SportyBet Kenya is run by Dreamhub Technology Limited. On the 2025/26 register, the most recent published list, it holds bookmaker licence BK 0001203 and public gaming licence PG 0001202, which ChampsBase confirmed. SportyBet’s own Kenyan footer still names the Betting Control and Licensing Board, which the Gambling Regulatory Authority replaced under the Gambling Control Act 2025.

Kenya’s whole industry is in a licensing transition. According to iGaming Times, the authority’s notice said licences issued under the old regime remained valid until 24 September 2026, and as of 14 October 2026 it hadn’t published a register of licences granted under the new 2026 rules. A court challenge over the new licence fees was also still pending. We found no published 2026 licence number for SportyBet Kenya.

SportyBet’s exit from Kenya and return

SportyBet left Kenya in 2022 during a period of tax and licensing disputes that pushed several operators out of the market, according to Shore Africa. It relaunched in 2025: Shore Africa reported the return in August 2025, and iGaming Today wrote in October 2025 that the brand now operates under Dreamhub Technology Limited and had resolved its earlier tax disputes with the Kenya Revenue Authority. SportyBet Kenya’s chief executive, Samwel Muchai, presented cash out as the centrepiece of the relaunch, describing it as a tool to empower players.

🇳🇬 Nigeria: no welcome bonus

ChampsBase checked SportyBet Nigeria in August 2026 and found no welcome bonus. Two audits found no new-customer offer, and a support agent confirmed by phone on 25 August 2026 that there was none. Other websites advertise a “150% welcome bonus up to ₦100,000”, but ChampsBase couldn’t find it on any SportyBet page, and support said SportyBet isn’t affiliated with those pages. Ratingbet also found no welcome bonus in May 2026.

SportyBet Nigeria does have a referral scheme, but ChampsBase notes that the ₦500 reward goes to the existing customer who refers you, not to the new player.

🇬🇭 Ghana: no confirmed welcome bonus

Ghana is similar. Ghanaian reviewers describe SportyBet’s value as coming from its Multiple Bet Bonus rather than a sign-up offer. One site still advertises a 150% welcome bonus while another reports it was removed, so we can’t confirm a current offer. Check the Promotions page after you register.

🇰🇪 Kenya: First Deposit Gift

Kenya is the one market where we found a new-customer offer described in detail. Football Whispers reported in June 2026 a First Deposit Gift of up to 300%, capped at KES 1,500:

Football Whispers says the gift must be wagered 14 times, and that the KES 100 tier expires after six days. Other Kenyan guides describe SportyBet’s welcome offers in general terms that change from time to time, so open the Promotions page in your account and read the current terms before you deposit.

SportyBet’s real value is in its everyday promotions. ChampsBase counted 14 promotions running on SportyBet Nigeria at the end of August 2026. These are the main ones reviewers confirmed:

⚽ SportyBet sportsbook and odds

Football is SportyBet’s great strength. ChampsBase called it the deepest football catalogue it found in Nigeria. On one test day, it counted 256 top competitions and 177 in-play events, including 89 competitions from England, 91 from Argentina, 60 from Germany and 52 from Italy.

Bet types and tools

• Bet types: singles, multiples, system bets, Flexi Bet, One Cut, AnyWin and Bet Builder.
• Flexi Bet: lets a multiple still pay out if some selections lose, at a reduced return that you see before you place the bet.
• Cash out: full, partial and automatic, and ChampsBase found that cash-outs carry no cost.
• Live betting: a large in-play menu on football, plus other sports.
• Odds format: decimal only.

One thing to watch in live markets: ChampsBase saw a price drop from 1.77 to 1.75 within about 12 seconds while the selection sat in its betslip. Check the odds before you confirm.

Other sports

Beyond football, SportyBet covers basketball, tennis and other sports, with eSports and virtual sports available around the clock. Kenyan comparison site Paybillke rated SportyBet’s eSports markets as the strongest of the three big Kenyan brands it compared.

🎰 SportyBet casino, Aviator and virtuals

SportyBet’s casino is a secondary product. In Nigeria, the Lagos licence covers online casino, and in Ghana the commission’s register lists SportyBet for online casino as well as sports betting. ChampsBase counted more than 200 games, with Pragmatic Play and Spribe among the providers.

• Aviator: loaded in 1.8 seconds in ChampsBase’s test, and payouts were credited correctly, although the animation froze for about two seconds in one round.
• Sporty Jet: SportyBet’s own crash game, which ran without problems in testing.
• Slots: popular titles such as Gates of Olympus loaded in about two seconds.
• Virtual sports: instant virtual football and other virtual games, available 24/7.

💳 SportyBet deposits and withdrawals by country

SportyBet is built around each country’s favourite way to pay: bank transfers and wallets in Nigeria, mobile money in Ghana and M-Pesa in Kenya.

🇳🇬 Nigeria

Deposits start at ₦100, with a maximum of ₦9,999,999 per transaction. ChampsBase tested OPay, GTBank USSD and bank transfer, and lists cards, PalmPay, Kuda, Moniepoint, Quickteller, Sporty Bank and Wema Bank as other options. Bank transfer accounts generated for a deposit expire after 30 minutes.

Withdrawals in Nigeria range from ₦1 to ₦9,999,999, with 53 Nigerian banks listed, and ChampsBase paid no fee on any of its six payouts:

The pattern was clear: the first bank withdrawal of a session was slow, while later ones and OPay payouts arrived within about a minute. During the delays, the screen only showed “Pending”, without an estimate. Your first deposit fixes your account name, and payouts can only go to an account in that name.

🇬🇭 Ghana

In Ghana, SportyBet works with MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money, as well as bank cards, according to Ghanaian reviewers. The minimum deposit is GHS 1, and withdrawals go back to your mobile money wallet or a local account. Use a wallet registered in your own name, matching the name on your SportyBet account and your Ghana Card.

🇰🇪 Kenya

In Kenya, you deposit through M-Pesa using paybill 590555, with your SportyBet-registered phone number as the account number:

1. Open M-Pesa. Use the M-Pesa app or dial *334#.
2. Choose Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill.
3. Enter business number 590555.
4. Enter your registered phone number as the account.

Paybillke reports that deposits usually arrive within 30 seconds and that withdrawals to M-Pesa take under 10 minutes for verified accounts. Unverified accounts are limited to KES 5,000 a day until ID and selfie verification is complete. Keep your M-Pesa confirmation code as proof of payment. M-Pesa’s own transaction fees are set by Safaricom, not by SportyBet.

SportyBet keeps sign-up short in every country: you register with your phone number and a password, confirm an SMS code, and verify your identity as your activity grows.

• Nigeria: ChampsBase found a single sign-up screen with phone number, password and an optional referral code, and no document upload. Verification is tiered: confirming your BVN or NIN raises your limits, and its BVN check took under 90 seconds. Its SMS codes took between two and three and a half minutes to arrive.
• Ghana: Ghanaian rules require identity checks against the Ghana Card, and the Gaming Commission signed an agreement with the National Identification Authority in 2025.
• Kenya: the Gambling Control Act requires KYC before an account is activated and before the first deposit. Paybillke reports ID and selfie verification at SportyBet Kenya.

📱 SportyBet mobile app

The app is one of SportyBet’s biggest strengths. ChampsBase checked the store listings and tested the Android app in Nigeria:

Over three days of use, the Android app didn’t crash once, and Face ID worked first time on iPhone. The downside: notifications are on by default, and the tester received 14 unrequested notifications by the second day, so switch off the ones you don’t want.

In Kenya, local sources describe an Android app on Google Play and mobile web access for iPhone users, rather than a native iOS app. Paybillke rated SportyBet Kenya’s app the smoothest of the three big Kenyan brands it compared.

💬 SportyBet customer support

Each country has its own support team. In Nigeria, ChampsBase tested phone and live chat:

• Phone: four calls, each answered within 90 seconds, with accurate answers.
• Live chat: slower, with a first reply after 4 minutes 17 seconds in one test and queues of about seven to eight minutes in another. English only.
• WhatsApp: not offered in Nigeria.

In Kenya, Paybillke lists a SportyBet WhatsApp line, +254 700 200 200, for deposit problems, and rated SportyBet Kenya’s live chat the fastest of the three brands it compared. Support numbers and emails for each country are in the key facts table above.

⚖️ Betting law in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya

SportyBet operates under three different legal systems. Here’s what each one means for you.

🇳🇬 Nigeria: states regulate betting

On 22 November 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that lotteries and games of chance are a matter for the states and nullified the National Lottery Act 2005 outside the Federal Capital Territory. The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority, created under a 2021 state law, has become the most important licensing authority, and more than twenty states have joined the Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria. A national Central Gaming Bill passed the House of Representatives, but the Lagos authority reported on 26 January 2026 that the President had declined to sign it.

Lagos has also tightened its rules in 2026. Lagos High Court judgments confirmed that operators serving Lagos residents need a Lagos licence; on 20 July 2026, Lagos launched a six-month homologation programme requiring games, random number generators and platforms to be tested by an authorised lab; and its September 2026 illegal operators list named 44 companies, including Stake and bet365.

🇬🇭 Ghana: one national regulator

Ghana has a single national regulator, the Gaming Commission of Ghana, under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Licences are renewed every year and can only be held by limited liability companies, and running an unlicensed gambling business is a criminal offence. You must be 18 or older, and identity checks use the Ghana Card. In 2025, the authorities restricted access to 11 unauthorised gambling websites through the National Communications Authority.

🇰🇪 Kenya: a new law and a new regulator

Kenya’s Gambling Control Act 2025 came into force on 26 August 2025 and replaced the Betting Control and Licensing Board with the Gambling Regulatory Authority. According to iGaming Times, the Act and its regulations set a minimum online stake of KES 20, require winnings to be paid within two days, ban credit cards and crypto for gambling, require KYC before an account is activated, and give players deposit, loss and session limits. As covered above, the authority hadn’t yet published its 2026 licence register by mid-October 2026.

🧾 Tax on SportyBet winnings

How the Nigerian tax shows up on your slip

ChampsBase noticed that SportyBet Nigeria’s betslip shows your gross potential return, not the amount after tax. On a ₦1,000 bet at odds of 3.20, the slip quoted ₦3,200, but ₦3,090 was credited: the profit was ₦2,200, and 5% of that is ₦110. Across six test bets totalling ₦6,000, the four winners returned ₦7,515 after ₦185 of tax. ChampsBase calculated that, at even-money odds, you’d need to win about 51.3% of your bets just to break even after tax.

Why Kenyan deposits cost more

In Kenya, the 5% excise is taken from each deposit, so a KES 1,000 deposit gives you KES 950 to bet with. Another 5% is withheld when you withdraw. Over many deposits and withdrawals, that adds up, so it’s worth depositing less often and in amounts you plan to use.

🧮 Worked example: why long multiples rarely win

The Multi Bet Bonus rewards long accumulators, but every extra leg makes the slip less likely to win. Five selections that each have a 70% chance of winning combine to only about a 17% chance that all five win (0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 ≈ 0.17). Ten such selections drop to under 3% (0.7 to the power of 10 ≈ 0.028). A big percentage boost on a slip that rarely wins is worth far less than it looks.

Bet9ja is run by KC Gaming Networks Limited, a Lagos-based company. According to Wikipedia, it launched on 10 September 2013 and was co-founded by Ayo Ojuroye, its chief executive, and Kunle Soname, its chairman.

The Lagos licence

Since the Supreme Court ruled on 22 November 2024 that gambling is a matter for the states, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority has become Nigeria’s leading regulator. When we checked the LSLGA register in October 2026, it listed KC Gaming Networks Limited, trade name Bet9ja, under Online Sports Betting/Online Casino, with a licence period from 3 October 2026 to 2 October 2027. That’s a freshly renewed licence covering both the sportsbook and the casino.

Other permits

Soccernet and Goal list Bet9ja’s older national licence numbers, 0001074 for sports betting and 00000014 for casino, issued under the National Lottery Regulatory Commission. ChampsBase describes these numbers as legacy references. After the 2024 Supreme Court judgment, the National Lottery Act applies only in the Federal Capital Territory, so the Lagos licence is the one that matters most for players today. Reviewers also mention licences from other states, including Osun.

The company today

In January 2026, KC Gaming Networks held a four-day strategy retreat in Lagos, reported by ThisDay. Chief executive Ayo Ojuroye told staff that “Bet9ja is not here to compete; we are here to make impact”, while chairman Kunle Soname said the conversation was about “how and in which direction we grow next”. The priorities named included customer experience, internal processes, the changing regulatory environment and responsible growth.

Wikipedia records that it was the headline sponsor of a Big Brother Naija season in 2019 and became an official partner of the Nigeria Professional Football League in 2022, and that in April 2020 Alexa ranked it the third most-visited website in Nigeria, behind only Google and YouTube.

🎁 Bet9ja welcome offer: the ₦2,500 free bet

Bet9ja’s new customer offer has changed. Reviews published in October 2026 by Toffeeweb, AceOdds and Goal all describe the same offer: register, place a bet of at least ₦1,000 and get a ₦2,500 free bet. It isn’t a deposit match. None of these reviews mentions the 100% first-deposit bonus Bet9ja has offered in the past, and ChampsBase and Football Whispers both list the lack of a traditional deposit bonus as a drawback.

Key terms reported by reviewers

• Promo code at registration: you enter a code in the “Promotion Code (Optional)” field when you sign up. AceOdds and Toffeeweb both say it can’t be added later.
• Qualifying bet: a first bet of at least ₦1,000.
• Credit: Toffeeweb says the free bet is credited after the qualifying bet settles.
• Rollover: Toffeeweb reports that the bonus must be wagered 10 times on sports at total slip odds of at least 3.00 within 30 days. Bet9ja’s support told ChampsBase that only real-money bets at odds of 3.00 or higher count, and that cashed-out bets don’t.

Is the offer worth it?

It’s small but easy to understand, and it only needs a ₦1,000 bet. In this Bet9ja review we rate it below rivals’ headline offers: Betano, for example, advertises a 50% first-deposit match up to ₦200,000. But a big bonus with demanding wagering isn’t always better value, and Bet9ja’s real strength is what it offers existing customers every week.

Football is the heart of Bet9ja. Toffeeweb counts more than 100 football leagues, from the Premier League and Champions League to the NPFL, AFCON and CAF club competitions, and up to 10,000 markets across a busy Premier League Saturday. ChampsBase lists more than 25 sports in total, including basketball, tennis and eSports.

Odds and margins

Bet9ja’s prices are competitive but not always the best. Toffeeweb puts its average Premier League 1X2 margin at about 6–7%, similar to Betway and SportyBet, and says 1xBet can undercut it on major fixtures. On the single fixture ChampsBase compared, Bet9ja’s margin was 7.2% against Betway’s 5.5%. If you bet big on top European leagues, compare prices before you place a slip.

Live betting and streaming

In-play markets include match result, next goal, total corners and, on major matches, booking and substitution markets. Live streaming covers major European leagues, selected African club competitions and international fixtures, but you need a balance of at least ₦200 to watch, and there’s no stream for NPFL matches. ChampsBase measured an in-play odds lag of two to four seconds under heavy load on 5G, which matters if you cash out live.

🎰 Bet9ja casino, Aviator and virtuals

Bet9ja’s Lagos licence covers online casino as well as sports, so its casino is fully licensed. ChampsBase counted more than 200 games from providers including Pragmatic Play, Evolution, Spribe, NetEnt and Ezugi, with Aviator, popular slots, live roulette and live blackjack. In its mobile test, slots and Aviator loaded in four to seven seconds on 5G, 12 rounds of Aviator ran without cash-out lag, and Evolution’s live tables streamed for 12 minutes without buffering.

Virtual sports

Bet9ja built much of its following on virtuals, which grew out of its shops. Soccernet lists eight virtual leagues and tournaments, including Zoom and the Bet9ja League, plus Bet9ja Stadium, which features seven virtual clubs modelled on teams from Europe’s top leagues. There are also virtual greyhounds, basketball, tennis and baseball. Virtual results are generated by a random number generator, so no form guide or tip can predict them.

Numbers games

ChampsBase also lists 49ja, a numbers game. As with the casino and virtuals, outcomes are random and the house always keeps an edge.

💳 Bet9ja deposits and withdrawals

Few Nigerian bookmakers match Bet9ja’s cashier. ChampsBase lists OPay, PalmPay, bank transfer, USSD, Visa and Mastercard, GTBank, Zenith, First Bank and Fidelity USSD, Quickteller, Interswitch, Flutterwave, Paystack, Monnify and a Bet9ja virtual account, plus USDT for deposits only.

In ChampsBase’s test, three withdrawals to a GTBank account in the tester’s name arrived in 55, 67 and 47 minutes, all on the same banking day, and the amounts received matched the amounts requested. Toffeeweb’s bank withdrawals all arrived within 24 hours. Withdrawals must go to a bank account in the same name as your verified Bet9ja account, and you’ll confirm them with a one-time code.

📱 Bet9ja mobile app

Bet9ja’s Android app is available on Google Play and as an APK from the official website, and needs Android 8.0 or later. On iPhone, the App Store lists Bet9ja: Live Sports Betting from KC Gaming Networks Ltd, which needs iOS 16 or later and had a 4.0 rating from about 2,500 reviews when we checked. ChampsBase installed the Android app in about a minute and found it launched in roughly six seconds.

The app gives you the full sportsbook, casino, virtuals, deposits and withdrawals, plus biometric login, push notifications and HD streaming for selected matches. For low-data users, Bet9ja also keeps a lighter “classic” mobile version, which Toffeeweb found fast on slow connections.

One problem to know about: in ChampsBase’s test, the in-app camera froze twice during ID verification on an Android phone. Verifying through the desktop site, which shows a QR code to scan with your phone, worked in about four minutes.

• Phone: ChampsBase waited six minutes on a Sunday, and the agent answered its rollover question correctly.
• Telegram: the bot gave generic FAQ links until the query was phrased precisely enough to reach a person.
• Messages: Football Whispers and Goal both report that message replies can take up to 48 hours.

Support is Bet9ja’s weakest area. If your issue is urgent, phone during the day rather than relying on messages.

⚖️ Betting law in Nigeria and what it means for Bet9ja users

Nigeria’s betting rules changed significantly in 2024 and 2025, and they affect how you should judge any bookmaker, including Bet9ja.

States now regulate gambling

Lagos courts back the licence requirement

In 2026, Lagos High Court judgments confirmed that operators serving Lagos residents need a Lagos licence and must pay the state’s levies, even if their servers or offices are elsewhere. Bet9ja, headquartered in Lagos, holds that licence.

New certification rules

On 20 July 2026, Lagos announced a six-month homologation programme requiring licensed operators to submit their games, random number generators and platforms for testing by an authorised lab. Systems without a valid certificate at the end of the transition will be disconnected. For players, that means Lagos-licensed products, including Bet9ja’s casino and virtuals, are moving onto a single, state-approved testing standard.

On 21 October 2025, in Portapa (Pty) Ltd t/a Supabets and Others v Casino Association of South Africa and Another [2025] ZASCA 158, the Supreme Court of Appeal held that under the Gauteng Gambling Act it is unlawful for Gauteng-licensed bookmakers to offer fixed-odds bets on casino games, including roulette, because a Gauteng bookmaker’s licence only covers sporting events. The case concerned livestreamed roulette, not slots specifically.

4. The National Gambling Board’s position

The National Gambling Board said the ruling’s reasoning means “its implications extend to all bookmakers across the country”, called on bookmakers offering casino-style games as contingency betting to stop, and told provincial licensing authorities to monitor compliance and take “swift and decisive action”. It has also warned that winnings from interactive gambling will be confiscated.

5. The opposing view

Hollywoodbets says the ruling “was specific to a case involving Supabets’ retail operations in Gauteng” and “does not extend to our operations, nor to other provinces where we are duly licensed”, adding that its slots, roulette and other fixed-odds products are approved by provincial boards. The Western Cape regulator has said “the Supabets judgement does not apply to the Western Cape province”, and the South African Bookmakers’ Association says the ruling applies only to Gauteng.

6. What’s still pending

The National Gambling Policy Council has resolved to fast-track a new national gambling Bill, but ChampsBase reported that it hadn’t passed by October 2026, and Gauteng says it’s amending its own law to regulate online betting. A new National Gambling Board was appointed by Cabinet in September 2026. Until legislation or further court rulings settle the matter, the dispute continues.

🏛️ Inside the Supabets judgment

Because so much of the Spina Zonke debate depends on how the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling is read, it’s worth looking at what the court actually decided, as summarised by the law firm Werksmans on Polity.

How the case started

In January 2017, the Gauteng Gambling Board approved software called Aardvark, which lets bookmakers offer and accept bets on sports and lottery draws and record bets electronically. From June 2017, Supabets used it to offer online fixed-odds bets on livestreamed roulette. The Casino Association of South Africa, which represents licensed casino operators, went to court. It argued that only casino licence holders may offer bets on the outcome of casino games, and that Supabets’ product exposed casinos to unfair competition and the public to unregulated gambling. The High Court agreed in 2023 and set aside the board’s approvals. Supabets appealed and lost.

What the court decided

• Gauteng bookmakers are limited to sporting events. Unlike several other provinces, the Gauteng Gambling Act authorises bookmakers to accept fixed-odds bets on “sporting events” specifically.
• Roulette isn’t a sporting event. The Act defines a sporting event as including “any ball-game, race (including a race involving vehicles or animals) or other athletic or sporting contest”. The court read “athletic or sporting” as qualifying the word “game”, so a game must be sporting in character. Roulette is a casino game, which requires a casino licence.
• No conflict with national law. The court read the provincial and national Acts together, noting that the National Gambling Act leaves provinces room to set their own contingencies.
• Online betting as such isn’t banned. The court said “nothing prevents bookmakers from using technology or electronic means” to offer betting within their licensed scope.

Why the ruling is read in two different ways

The court described the Gauteng Act as “a carefully constructed scheme for regulating gambling within the Gauteng Province” and noted that other provinces allow bets on “any contingency”. Werksmans argues that this makes the ruling specific to Gauteng and that the National Gambling Board has misread it. The law firm Eversheds Sutherland, writing on GoLegal in March 2026, takes a broader view: it says the courts rejected the argument that online casino games are merely “bets on outcomes”, that “contingency bets” can’t be used to disguise casino games, and that online casino-style games, including slots, are unlawful unless Parliament expressly approves them.

Online casino isn’t licensed

Section 11 of the National Gambling Act, 2004 prohibits unauthorised interactive games. A 2008 amendment that would have licensed interactive gambling never came into operation. Under the Act, playing at an unlicensed online casino is itself an offence, and penalties for illegal gambling can reach R10 million, ten years in prison, or both.

Changes on the way

The National Gambling Policy Council has resolved to fast-track a new national gambling Bill to bring national and provincial rules into line, expected at Cabinet later in 2026. The National Gambling Board has also invited proposals for a system to monitor and block illegal gambling websites, announced a partnership with the Advertising Regulatory Board on 17 September 2026 to monitor gambling adverts, and in August 2026 a national Illegal Gambling Task Team began operations in Limpopo.

New certification rules

On 20 July 2026, Lagos announced a six-month homologation programme requiring licensed operators to submit their games, random number generators and platforms for testing by an authorised lab. ❓ Quick answer: can you bet with Betway in Kenya in 2026?

🗓️ Betway in Kenya: a timeline

Betway was one of the best-known international betting brands in Kenya, and its story there tracks the country’s long-running battles over betting tax.

💸 Why did Betway leave Kenya?

Betway’s own exit notice in May 2023 didn’t give a reason, and we haven’t found an official explanation. What the public record does show is a long-running conflict over tax.

In 2019, Betway was one of 27 bookmakers caught up when Kenya’s regulator refused to renew licences and ordered mobile money providers to stop processing their payments. It returned only after agreeing to the tax regime of the time, which meant deducting 20% from customers’ winnings. In April 2025, Business Daily reported that the application to dissolve BlueJay Limited came amid a KES 5.2 billion tax demand from the KRA, and placed Betway among several companies that had left or planned to leave Kenya because of frustrations with the taxman.

Betway wasn’t alone. Betin left in 2023 as well, and Betsafe announced its exit in May 2024 “amid heavy taxation”, according to Capital FM. Kenya’s betting taxes have changed repeatedly since then: today players pay 5% excise duty on deposits and 5% withholding tax on withdrawals, and operators pay 15% tax on gross gaming revenue.

🌐 Can you still use Betway from Kenya?

Not legally through a Kenyan licence. Betway closed its Kenyan site and stopped accepting Kenyan registrations in 2023, and we found no Betway entity on Kenya’s lists of licensed operators. Betway’s sites in other countries, such as Ghana or South Africa, are licensed for players in those countries and are built around their own currencies, payment methods and rules.

Trying to play on a foreign Betway site from Kenya, or on any operator without a Kenyan licence, means giving up the protections Kenyan law now provides. Well-known brands that have left a market are a favourite target for copycats. Since Betway doesn’t operate in Kenya, treat any of the following as a red flag:

Kenya’s gambling rules have changed a lot since Betway left, so it’s worth knowing what to expect from any bookmaker you choose now.

A new law and a new regulator

The Gambling Control Act, 2025 was signed on 7 August 2025 and came into force on 26 August 2025. It repealed the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act of 1966 and replaced the Betting Control and Licensing Board with the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Kenya (GRA). Licensees must be Kenyan-registered companies with at least 30% of shares held by Kenyan citizens.

Licensing in transition

Detailed regulations took effect from 1 July 2026. The GRA reopened licence applications on 18 August 2026 and set 24 September 2026 as the end date for licences issued under the old law. A High Court judicial review of the new licence fees (JR E251 of 2026) was still pending in mid-October 2026, and the GRA hadn’t yet published a 2026 register. Some operators, such as SportPesa, already display licence numbers in the new GRAK/2026 format.

Rules that protect you

• Your identity, age and location must be checked before your account is activated and before your first deposit.
• Operators must offer daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits.
• Winnings must be credited to your account within two days.

When we checked the Gaming Commission of Ghana’s register in October 2026, Betway appeared with two entries: sports betting and online casino. Both were issued on 1 January 2026 and expire on 31 December 2026, the same dates as every other online licence on the register. Ghanaian licences are renewed every year, so if you’re reading this in 2027, check the register again.

The dual licence matters. Some well-known brands in Ghana, 22Bet for example, are licensed for sports betting only.
