Supabets Review South Africa 2026: R50 Free Bet, Licence, Payouts and the Supabets Ruling

Supabets is one of South Africa’s longest-running betting brands. It launched in 2008, runs retail betting shops as well as supabets.co.za, and is known for its R50 sign-up free bet, a wide choice of voucher payments and a data-free Android app. It’s also the bookmaker whose name is attached to the most important South African gambling judgment of recent years: the Supreme Court of Appeal’s 2025 ruling on bets on roulette.

This Supabets review covers its sports and horse racing betting: the welcome offer, promotions, odds and markets, deposits and withdrawals, FICA, the app and support. We also explain its licence and what the “Supabets ruling” means for you. In line with our South Africa policy, we don’t review or promote casino-style games. Every fact was checked in October and November 2026, and where sources disagree, we show each version.

📌 Supabets at a glance

  • Licence: Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER), licence 9-2-1-00055, according to ChampsBase, BetScout, ToffeeWeb and AfricaSoccer.
  • Company: Portapa 2 (Pty) Ltd holds the MER licence, per ChampsBase and BetScout; Portapa (Pty) Ltd trades as Supabets in the court records.
  • Launched: 2008; head office in Illovo, Johannesburg, according to Wikipedia.
  • Welcome offer: R50 free bet on registration, plus deposit bonuses of up to R5,000 over three deposits.
  • Promotions: Multi-bet bonus up to 125%, 10% weekly sports cashback and a losing leg refund.
  • Payments: instant EFT, cards, MTN MoMo and vouchers such as 1Voucher, OTT and Blu; minimums from R1 to R5 depending on source.
  • Legal note: in October 2025, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that Supabets’ bets on streamed roulette in Gauteng were unlawful.

⭐ Our verdict: 8.0/10

Supabets is a solid, locally rooted bookmaker with one of the easiest sign-up offers in South Africa, very flexible payments and fast e-wallet withdrawals. Its bonus terms are strict and inconsistently reported, the sportsbook is less deep than Betway’s or Hollywoodbets’ on some measures, and its name is tied to a major court defeat over casino-style betting. For sports and racing bettors, it’s a good second or third account.

✅ What we like

  • ✅ R50 free bet with no deposit
  • ✅ Deposits from R1 to R5, including many vouchers
  • ✅ E-wallet withdrawals in about 30 to 60 minutes
  • ✅ Multi-bet bonus, weekly cashback and losing leg refund
  • ✅ Horse and greyhound racing, plus local PSL, rugby and cricket

⚠️ What could be better

  • ⚠️ Strict, inconsistently reported bonus terms
  • ⚠️ Bonus winnings capped and withdrawable only by EFT, per bettingexpert
  • ⚠️ No iOS app
  • ⚠️ Sources disagree on support quality and app availability
  • ⚠️ Its casino-style products are at the centre of a legal dispute
⚠️ South Africa legal note: sports and horse racing betting with a provincially licensed bookmaker is legal. Online casino games are prohibited by section 11 of the National Gambling Act. Casino-style games offered by bookmakers are disputed: the National Gambling Board (NGB) says they’re unlawful nationwide, while the Mpumalanga and Western Cape regulators say the Supabets ruling applies only to Gauteng. This review covers Supabets’ sports and racing betting only.

🏢 Who runs Supabets?

Supabets launched in 2008, according to Goal, ToffeeWeb and Gambling Insider, and describes itself as a South African operator of both retail betting shops and online betting. Wikipedia places its head office at 37 Fricker Road, Illovo, Johannesburg, and refers to the wider business as the Supabets Gaming Group.

Several companies sit behind the brand, and their names appear in different sources:

CompanyRoleSource
Portapa 2 (Pty) LtdHolder of the MER bookmaker licence for supabets.co.zaChampsBase and BetScout (AffSupreme South Africa research)
Portapa (Pty) Ltd t/a SupabetsFirst appellant in the 2025 Supreme Court of Appeal caseSCA judgment, SAFLII
Supaworld Gauteng (Pty) LtdSecond appellant in the same caseSCA judgment
Intelligent Gaming (Pty) LtdOwner of the Aardvark betting software (SCA); described as Supabets’ owner by Gambling InsiderSCA judgment; Gambling Insider

Intelligent Gaming’s leadership has spoken for Supabets in trade press. In 2020, when Global Bet’s virtual sports went live with Supabets “through Intelligent Gaming”, its CEO Marc Plaxton-Harrison said he anticipated “a big revenue growth” from virtual sports, iGaming Business reported. Gambling Insider also lists Ghana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe as Supabets markets, but this review covers South Africa only. Each country has its own licence and rules.

Supabets has occasionally made headlines beyond betting. In February 2021, it withdrew its sponsorship of podcaster MacG after a backlash over homophobic remarks, according to Wikipedia.

🛡️ Is Supabets licensed in South Africa?

Yes. In South Africa, bookmakers are licensed by the provinces, not nationally, and Supabets’ online sportsbook is licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER). Four independent sources give the same licence number, 9-2-1-00055: ChampsBase, BetScout, ToffeeWeb (November 2026) and AfricaSoccer (July 2026). Goal also says Supabets is licensed in Mpumalanga, without a number.

The MER doesn’t publish an online register that we could check, so we rely on these matching records. You can confirm it yourself in two ways. First, scroll to the footer of supabets.co.za and check the company name and licence number. Second, the MER advises players to check that a betting website’s address matches the one on its MER licence certificate, and to report illegal gambling to the MER on 013 750 8000 or compliance@mer.org.za.

Supabets’ retail betting shops in Gauteng operate under Gauteng Gambling Board approvals, as the court case below shows. That’s separate from its online licence.

  • Legal: sports and horse racing betting with a provincially licensed bookmaker, for people aged 18 and over.
  • Illegal: online casino games, under section 11 of the National Gambling Act. The NGB has warned that unlawful winnings can be forfeited.
  • Disputed: casino-style games, such as slots and crash games, offered by licensed bookmakers. This is the grey area the Supabets case sits in.

🏛️ South Africa’s betting rules in brief

To understand where Supabets fits, it helps to know how South Africa regulates betting. The National Gambling Act 2004 sets the national framework, and each of the nine provinces licenses and supervises bookmakers, casinos and racing within its borders. The National Gambling Board oversees the provincial regulators and keeps national registers.

RuleWhat it means for Supabets players
Minimum age 18Section 12(4) of the National Gambling Act; Supabets requires you to be 18 or over
Provincial bookmaker licencesSupabets’ online sportsbook is licensed in Mpumalanga; Betway and Hollywoodbets hold Western Cape licences, among others
Online casino bannedSection 11 prohibits interactive games; foreign casino licences aren’t recognised
No tax on winningsYou keep the full payout; operators pay provincial taxes
FICAIdentity and address checks before withdrawals
National exclusionThe National Register of Excluded Persons applies across licensed operators

iGaming Times counted 315 licensed bookmakers in South Africa as at 31 March 2025. With that much choice, it pays to compare offers and to stay with licensed operators. The NGB has warned that winnings from illegal gambling can be forfeited, and ChampsBase reported that R3,075,000 was forfeited between 1 April 2025 and 10 April 2026.

⚖️ The Supabets ruling explained

If you’ve read about South African gambling law recently, you’ve probably seen the phrase “the Supabets ruling”. It refers to Portapa (Pty) Limited t/a Supabets and Others v Casino Association of South Africa and Another [2025] ZASCA 158, decided by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on 21 October 2025. Here’s what happened, based on the judgment published on SAFLII.

DateWhat happened
January 2017The Gauteng Gambling Board approves the Aardvark software, which lets bookmakers take bets electronically
23 June 2017Supabets starts offering fixed-odds bets on live roulette streamed from Lithuania in its Gauteng betting shops, before the board’s conditional consent was in place
2 March 2018The board decides Supabets hasn’t broken the Gauteng Act
June and July 2018The board approves Supaworld’s and Supabets’ requests to offer roulette bets
2023The High Court, on the Casino Association of South Africa’s application, sets aside the board’s approvals
26 August 2025The SCA hears the appeals
21 October 2025The SCA dismisses the appeals of Supabets and the Gauteng Gambling Board, with costs

What the court decided

Justice Nambitha Dambuza, writing for a unanimous court, held that the Gauteng Gambling Act limits bookmakers to bets on sporting events, and that “roulette is a casino game and should be played in a casino”. The court declared that bookmakers may not offer fixed-odds bets on casino games, including roulette, and that Supabets’ conduct was unlawful under section 76(2) of the Gauteng Act. It also set aside the board’s 2018 decision. One line from the judgment explains the court’s concern: “the Board has no control over roulette streamed from Lithuania, or anywhere else outside the Gauteng Province.”

Does it apply outside Gauteng?

This is where regulators disagree:

  • National Gambling Board: says the implications extend to all bookmakers nationwide and that bookmakers offering casino-style games are “effectively operating as casinos”.
  • Mpumalanga Economic Regulator: says the ruling “does not affect the current betting offerings or contingencies” in Mpumalanga, where licensed bookmakers “are permitted to offer bets on any lawful contingency”, and that “the Court did not consider or pronounce on online or interactive gambling”. Its acting CEO, Gcina Mashaba, discussed the ruling on RISE fm on 4 November 2025.
  • Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board: says “the Supabets judgement does not apply to the Western Cape province”.

We didn’t find a public statement from Supabets responding to the judgment; Sunday World’s report of 26 October 2025 didn’t include one.

What it means for you

For sports and horse racing betting, nothing changes: Supabets’ MER-licensed sportsbook is unaffected by the judgment. The open question is casino-style games. Supabets’ site also offers slots, live dealer games and crash games under its MER approvals, and Gambling Insider reported that the MER approved its NetEnt and Red Tiger slots deal. Whether those products are lawful is disputed between the national regulator and the provinces, and a new national gambling Bill is being prepared. Until that’s settled, we review only Supabets’ sports and racing betting and don’t link to its casino pages.

🎁 Supabets review: the R50 free bet and welcome bonus

Supabets’ welcome package has three parts: a R50 free bet when you register, deposit bonuses over your first three deposits, and casino free spins. We cover the first two, which are for sports betting. The free bet is one of the easiest no-deposit offers in South Africa to claim, but its terms are stricter than the headline suggests, and our sources don’t agree on the details.

The R50 free bet

  • Who gets it: new South African residents aged 18+ who register and complete FICA verification, according to bettingexpert and ToffeeWeb.
  • No code: bettingexpert says no promo code is needed; Goal describes it as claimed through registration.
  • When it arrives: the next day at 7am, according to ToffeeWeb.
  • Bets allowed: single sports bets only, per bettingexpert; split bets are excluded, per ToffeeWeb.

The sources disagree on the rest, so here are both versions:

Termbettingexpert (6 Nov 2026)ToffeeWeb (5 Nov 2026)
Rollover3x5x
Minimum odds2/1 (3.00)2/1 (3.00)
Maximum payoutR5,000 maximum withdrawalR999
ExpiryNot stated15 days
Before withdrawingBonus winnings paid by EFT to a bank account onlyA deposit-matching bonus is required first

Goal adds that free bet winnings only become accessible after you make a deposit. In practice, treat the R50 as a way to try the site rather than free money: with odds of at least 3.00 and a 3x or 5x rollover, most free bets won’t turn into withdrawable cash.

Free bet maths: what R50 is really worth

Say you place the R50 on a single at odds of 3.00. Odds of 3.00 imply a one-in-three chance, and slightly less once the bookmaker’s margin is taken into account. If it wins, you’ll have about R150 to play through again: three times (R450 of bets) or five times (R750), depending on which terms apply, each time at odds of 3.00 or more. Each extra bet you have to place costs, on average, the bookmaker’s margin. That’s why we value no-deposit free bets for trying a bookmaker, not for profit.

The deposit bonuses

All our sources agree on a total of up to R5,000 across your first three deposits, for sports (and, per Goal, casino). The split differs:

DepositbettingexpertAfricaSoccer (Jul 2026)
1st100% up to R2,000Match up to R1,000
2nd50% up to R1,000Further match, amount not given
3rd100% up to R2,000Total up to R5,000
Wagering5x at odds of 14/10 (2.40) or betterNot stated

On bettingexpert’s version, a R1,000 first deposit gets a R1,000 bonus that has to be played five times, or R5,000 of bets, at odds of at least 2.40. If the bookmaker’s margin on those bets averaged 6%, you’d expect to lose about R300 of the bonus along the way, so the bonus is still worth having if you were going to bet that much anyway. If you weren’t, don’t deposit more than you planned just to unlock a bigger bonus.

The package also includes casino free spins. Given the legal dispute over casino-style games at South African bookmakers, we don’t review or recommend them.

🔁 Supabets promotions for existing customers

Supabets’ ongoing promotions are better than its welcome offer suggests. These are the sports and racing promotions our sources describe:

PromotionHow it worksSource
Multi-Bet BonusBoosts winning multi-bets, from 2.5% for two events up to 125% for 44 to 50 events; all sportsbettingexpert; ToffeeWeb and AfricaSoccer confirm the 125% maximum
Weekly Cashback10% back on losing sports bets placed from Tuesday to Mondaybettingexpert; AfricaSoccer
Losing Leg RefundFor bets of 5+ events with one losing leg; up to 1,000% of stake back, capped at R10,000; every selection must be at odds of 7/20 (1.35) or morebettingexpert; AfricaSoccer lists a “1000% losing leg bonus”
Horse racing cashback15%ToffeeWeb (terms not given)

The Losing Leg Refund is the standout. Long accumulators usually fail by one leg, and getting a multiple of your stake back softens that. But check the current terms in your account: AfricaSoccer itself suggests verifying the 1,000% figure, and the exact refund for each number of legs isn’t published in our sources.

Why long multi-bets still lose most of the time

The Multi-Bet Bonus and Losing Leg Refund both reward longer slips. Keep the maths in mind. If each selection has a 60% chance of winning, the chance of every leg winning falls quickly:

Selections (each 60% likely)Chance the whole slip wins
236%
5About 7.8%
10About 0.6%
20About 0.004%

Illustration: the chance of a multi-bet winning is the product of each leg’s chance. Real probabilities vary by match.

A 125% boost on a 44-leg slip sounds generous, but the chance of landing 44 legs is close to zero. Use the boosts on the slips you’d place anyway, not as a reason to add legs.

🗓️ Your first week with Supabets: a sensible plan

  1. Day 1: register, verify your number and send your FICA documents straight away, so the free bet and later withdrawals aren’t held up.
  2. Day 2: check that the R50 free bet has arrived and read its terms in your account: rollover, minimum odds, maximum payout and expiry.
  3. Day 2 or 3: place the free bet as a single at odds of 3.00 or more on a match you know well, rather than a random long shot.
  4. Before your first deposit: set a weekly deposit limit and decide whether you want the deposit bonus at all. If you don’t plan to bet five times your deposit, skip it.
  5. First deposit: try a small voucher or instant EFT deposit, then test a small withdrawal to an e-wallet so you know how long it takes.
  6. End of week: check your weekly cashback and compare what you’ve spent against your budget.

This plan keeps the free bet as a no-risk trial and makes sure you understand Supabets’ withdrawals before you have a big balance to move.

⚽ Supabets sportsbook

Supabets covers the sports South Africans bet on most. AfricaSoccer lists 20+ sports, Goal “over 20” and ToffeeWeb 30+, including:

  • Football: the Betway Premiership (PSL), Premier League, Champions League and the World Cup.
  • Rugby: the Springboks, Super Rugby, the URC and the Currie Cup.
  • Cricket: the Proteas, SA20 and the IPL.
  • Others: tennis, basketball, darts, golf, boxing and MMA, plus virtual sports.

Goal describes Supabets’ football odds as competitive, and AfricaSoccer praises its local odds and its soccer and horse racing coverage, but notes thinner international market depth than some rivals, which list 32 to 35 sports. Goal found no esports. Markets include match results, totals and handicaps, and live betting is available across the major sports.

Cash out and live betting

ToffeeWeb lists full, partial and automatic cash out, which lets you lock in a profit or cut a loss before a bet settles. Live betting is available on the main sports. Our 2026 sources don’t confirm sports live streaming, so don’t count on watching matches on Supabets.

Horse and greyhound racing

Supabets offers horse and greyhound racing, with each-way betting on racing only, according to ToffeeWeb, which also lists 15% cashback on horse racing. AfricaSoccer rates its horse racing coverage among Supabets’ strengths. Hollywoodbets remains South Africa’s best-known racing bookmaker, but Supabets is a reasonable second account for racing fans.

Virtual sports

In October 2020, Global Bet’s virtual sports, including its PRO Series, went live with Supabets, iGaming Business reported. Virtuals run around the clock, but each race or match is decided by software, so treat them as quick entertainment rather than a form of sports betting.

Popular markets explained

  • 1X2: home win, draw or away win.
  • Double Chance: two of the three outcomes, at lower odds.
  • Over/Under: total goals or points above or below a line.
  • Handicap: one team starts with a virtual lead or deficit.
  • Each-way: a racing bet that pays if your horse wins or places.
  • Multi-bet: several selections on one slip; all must win, and the Multi-Bet Bonus applies.

💳 Supabets deposits

Payments are where Supabets stands out. It accepts almost every way South Africans pay online, including cash vouchers for people without a bank card. Here’s what our sources list:

Method typeOptionsNotes
Instant EFTOzow, Peach Payments, SIDInstant (ToffeeWeb, Goal)
CardsVisa and Mastercard via PayU or DPO PaygateInstant
Mobile walletMTN MoMoInstant
Vouchers1Voucher, OTT, Blu Voucher, 1ForYou, Supabets VoucherBought with cash at retailers
CashKazang and other cash depositsListed by AfricaSoccer

ToffeeWeb says minimums start at R1 on several methods and that Supabets charges no fees of its own; Goal gives a R5 minimum deposit. Afrik-foot also mentions Zapper on the mobile site.

How to deposit with a voucher

  1. Buy a 1Voucher, OTT or Blu Voucher at a supermarket or spaza shop.
  2. Log in to Supabets and tap Deposit.
  3. Choose the voucher type and enter the PIN.
  4. Confirm; the money should appear straight away.

💸 Supabets withdrawals

MethodTypical time (ToffeeWeb, Nov 2026)
Standard Bank Instant MoneyAbout 30 minutes; daily cap
FNB eWalletWithin an hour; daily cap
Ozow, SupaPay, 1Voucher cash outWithin an hour; limits vary
Bank transfer (EFT)Up to 24 hours; higher maximum

Other sources give slightly different pictures. bettingexpert says EFT withdrawals take one to three business days and that bonus winnings can only be withdrawn by EFT. Our earlier South Africa research, based on ChampsBase, recorded Send-iMali withdrawals at about 12 hours. AfricaSoccer lists FNB eWallet, Standard Bank eWallet, cardless OTP and 1ForYou vouchers. Goal says most withdrawals are completed within 24 hours.

How to withdraw

  1. Complete FICA first: your ID and proof of address must be approved before your first withdrawal.
  2. Check bonus rules: active bonus money may block withdrawals until wagering is met.
  3. Choose Withdraw and pick a method; e-wallets are fastest.
  4. Enter the amount and your bank or phone details.
  5. Collect your cash with the PIN sent by SMS if you chose an e-wallet.

FICA verification

South African bookmakers must verify your identity under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. Supabets asks for your ID or passport and proof of residence dated within the last three months, sent as certified or colour copies of both sides by email or WhatsApp, according to Goal. Our earlier research found approval takes about 12 to 24 hours. Send clear images to avoid delays.

Tax on Supabets winnings

South African players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings, according to iGaming Times. Bookmakers pay provincial gambling taxes, and the government is preparing a 20% national tax on online gambling operators, whose final design is due in the February 2027 Budget, Focus GN reported in October 2026. That tax is levied on operators, but it could affect odds and promotions.

📱 Supabets app

Sources disagree about Supabets’ app:

  • ToffeeWeb and Goal: a data-free Android app for sports betting, with no iOS app. ToffeeWeb notes that the data-free mode excludes casino games.
  • AfricaSoccer: a data-free Android app plus a standard Android APK, and no iOS app.
  • Afrik-foot (updated February 2026): says there is no official app and recommends the mobile site at supabets.co.za.

Every source agrees that iPhone users should use the mobile site, which mirrors the desktop site and supports live betting and deposits. If you download an Android app, get it only from supabets.co.za, never from a link in a WhatsApp or Telegram group, and don’t allow it to read your SMS or contacts.

💬 Customer support

ToffeeWeb lists 24/7 live chat, email (support@supabets.co.za), phone (0861 762 237), WhatsApp (+27 65 831 7225), call-back requests, social media and a help centre with FAQs and how-to videos. Our earlier South Africa research, based on ChampsBase, found no live chat, and AfricaSoccer says response times vary. Use WhatsApp or phone for urgent payment problems, and keep your transaction reference handy.

📝 How to join Supabets

  1. Open supabets.co.za and tap Register in the top right corner.
  2. Enter your details: full name, South African mobile number, email address, and ID or passport number. Passport holders also give their country, gender and date of birth.
  3. Create a password and accept the terms.
  4. Verify your number with the one-time PIN sent by SMS.
  5. Send your FICA documents (ID and recent proof of address) by email or WhatsApp.
  6. Set a deposit limit before you deposit.
  7. Look for your R50 free bet the next morning, once your account is verified.

You must be 18 or over and live in South Africa, according to Goal and bettingexpert.

🔐 Supabets review: is it safe?

Named local company✅ Portapa 2 (Pty) Ltd (licence); Portapa (Pty) Ltd t/a Supabets (court records)
Track record✅ Operating since 2008, online and in retail shops

Court findings⚠️ SCA found its Gauteng roulette bets unlawful (October 2025)
Bonus terms⚠️ Strict and reported inconsistently

For sports and racing betting, Supabets is a licensed, long-established South African bookmaker, and your money is held by a locally licensed company subject to FICA rules. The court case is a real mark against its judgement on casino-style products, but it doesn’t affect the legality of its sportsbook. We found no regulatory action against Supabets’ online sports betting.

What to do if something goes wrong

  1. Contact Supabets support by WhatsApp, phone or email, with screenshots and your transaction reference.
  2. Check the terms of any bonus involved; most disputes are about wagering or maximum payouts.
  3. Escalate to the MER on 013 750 8000 or compliance@mer.org.za if the issue isn’t resolved.

🧭 Responsible gambling at Supabets

Licensed South African bookmakers must offer deposit limits and self-exclusion. You can also join the National Register of Excluded Persons: under rules gazetted on 10 February 2026, an exclusion takes effect ten days after it’s submitted and applies across licensed operators. The National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free, confidential help on 0800 006 008, or send “Help” to 076 675 0710 by WhatsApp or SMS.

Supabets’ low minimums, vouchers and long multi-bet promotions make it easy to bet little and often. Decide on a weekly budget and treat it as entertainment money.

Supabets’ R50 free bet is twice Hollywoodbets’ R25 and matches Easybet’s, but its rollover terms are stricter. Its accumulator boost goes much higher than Hollywoodbets’ Multi Boost, and its voucher options are among the widest. Hollywoodbets is still the stronger racing bookmaker, and Betway offers a deeper sportsbook with more payment options, including PayPal and crypto.

Supabets is a long-established South African bookmaker with an MER licence, a R50 no-deposit free bet, strong ongoing promotions for multi-bet players and some of the most flexible payment options in the market, from R1 vouchers to e-wallet payouts within an hour. Its bonus terms are strict and inconsistently reported, there’s no iOS app, and its role in the 2025 Supreme Court of Appeal case over roulette bets is a reminder to stick to sports and racing. Our score is 8.0/10. If you join, read the current free bet terms, complete FICA early and set a deposit limit.
