🪙 What is USDT (TRC20), and why do Nigerians use it?

USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin designed to track the US dollar. It exists on several blockchains, and “TRC20” means the version issued on Tron. The same USDT on Ethereum is “ERC20”, and on BNB Smart Chain “BEP20”. They’re not interchangeable: you must send on the network the receiving address supports.

Figures are from eco.com’s guide, dated 6 October 2026. Pulse Sports recommends TRC20 for lower fees and faster transfers than ERC20, which is why it’s the default choice for most Nigerian crypto users.

📥 How to deposit USDT (TRC20) at a Nigerian casino

1. Verify your casino account first. Bet9ja requires verification before USDT deposits, and Lagos-licensed casinos need your NIN for the 5% withholding tax.
2. Open the cashier on the official .ng site, choose Deposit and select USDT (Tether).
3. Choose the network. Pick TRC20 (Tron) if it’s offered. If the cashier shows only one network, note which one it is.
4. Copy the deposit address or scan the QR code. A TRC20 address always begins with “T”; an address starting “0x” is not TRC20.
5. Check the minimum shown in the cashier (from 1 USDT at Bet9ja and 1xBet, or ₦250 at Helabet).
6. Send from your wallet or exchange, selecting the same network, and make sure you have about 10 to 20 TRX for fees if you’re sending from a self-custody wallet.

🚫 Sent USDT on the wrong network? What happens

This is the biggest risk with USDT deposits. If you send TRC20 USDT to an Ethereum-style address, eco.com explains, the funds can land in the wrong contract on a chain that doesn’t recognise the token. Recovery usually needs the receiving platform to credit you manually, and for self-custody wallets it’s often impossible.

• Before sending: check that the casino’s network label (TRC20, ERC20 or BEP20) matches the network you select in your wallet.
• Check the address prefix: “T” for Tron, “0x” for Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.
• If it’s already gone: contact casino support immediately with the TXID, amount, network used and the address you sent to. Ask whether they can recover it; don’t count on it.

⚖️ TRC20 vs ERC20 vs BEP20

TRC20 figures are from eco.com (6 October 2026). For most Nigerian players, TRC20 is the default: it’s cheap, quick and widely supported by exchanges. Whatever you choose, the network must match on both ends.

💱 Getting USDT in Nigeria

To deposit USDT, you first need it in a wallet. Nigerian players typically buy it on an exchange or a peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace and withdraw it to the casino address. A few points to know in 2026:

• Licensed platforms: under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, platforms offering crypto trading, custody or exchange must register with the SEC. Nairacompare reported that, by the end of Q1 2026, Quidax and Busha held provisional licences under the SEC’s Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme.
• KYC: the same report says anonymous trading is no longer allowed and full KYC, including BVN, is mandatory on regulated platforms.
• P2P: Nairacompare lists Binance P2P, Bybit P2P, OKX P2P and Remitano as the P2P platforms Nigerians used most in Q1 2026.
• Fees: remember the network fee to move USDT, plus any exchange withdrawal fee, on top of the casino minimum.

Buying USDT only to deposit it at a casino adds an extra step and extra fees compared with paying in naira by OPay or PalmPay. Crypto makes most sense if you already hold USDT.

⚖️ Is it legal to use USDT at casinos in Nigeria?

Two sets of rules apply: gambling law and crypto law.

Gambling: the casino needs a licence

Since the Supreme Court’s ruling of 22 November 2024, states regulate gambling, and the LSLGA licenses most online casinos serving Nigerian players. Lagos also names unlicensed operators: its list of 10 September 2026 named 44, including Stake and bet365, according to iGaming Times. Paying in USDT doesn’t change that: a casino without a Nigerian licence is still unlicensed.

Crypto: legal, regulated and taxed

• ISA 2025: the Investments and Securities Act, signed on 25 March 2025, recognises digital assets, including stablecoins, as securities overseen by the SEC.
• Banks: the CBN reversed its 2021 ban on banks serving crypto businesses in December 2023, allowing licensed exchanges to use the banking system.
• Executive Order, July 2026: President Tinubu signed the Presidential Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination on 17 July 2026, creating a Virtual Asset Council chaired by the CBN, with the SEC and the Nigeria Revenue Service as vice-chairs. The SEC registers securities-related activities, and the CBN registers payment, settlement and custody services involving “non-security virtual assets”. The State House said the order doesn’t create a new regulator. It doesn’t mention gambling.
• Tax: from 1 January 2026, gains from disposing of digital assets are chargeable gains under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, at up to 25% for individuals, Nairacompare reported. Ask a tax adviser how this applies to your own crypto.

We’re not lawyers or tax advisers. The practical rule is simple: use a casino on the LSLGA register, and a regulated platform to buy and sell your USDT.

🔍 How to check a casino’s USDT network

Only one of our five picks has its USDT networks documented in independent sources. For the rest, you’ll need to check yourself, as Goal advises Bet9ja players to do: “Confirm which blockchain network the operator supports before proceeding.”

1. Open the deposit screen and select USDT.
2. Look for a network label such as TRC20, Tron, ERC20, Ethereum, BEP20 or BSC. Some cashiers list several as separate options.
3. Read the address. If it begins with “T”, it’s a Tron address; if it begins with “0x”, it’s Ethereum-style.
4. Match your wallet: in your exchange or wallet, choose the same network when you withdraw to the casino.
5. If nothing is labelled, ask support which network the address uses before sending anything.

⛽ Managing TRX and network fees

On Tron, USDT transfers use “energy”. If you don’t have enough, the network burns TRX to cover the fee. eco.com’s October 2026 guide explains the options:

• Burning TRX: about 6.5 TRX (~$2.20) to send to an existing USDT holder, or about 13 TRX (~$4.40) to a fresh wallet.
• Staked energy: if you stake TRX for energy, transfers burn no TRX.
• Rented energy: often under $1 per transfer.
• Keep a buffer: about 10 to 20 TRX for normal transfers. Without enough TRX, your USDT may be stuck in your wallet.

If you send from an exchange rather than your own wallet, the exchange usually charges its own fixed withdrawal fee instead, and may take 30 to 90 seconds to process, since exchanges often wait for around 20 confirmations.

🧮 Worked examples

Small deposit: 10 USDT

You send 10 USDT from your own wallet to a casino address on TRC20. If the address hasn’t held USDT before and you burn TRX, the fee is about $4.40, or 44% of the deposit. Even at $2.20, it’s 22%. For small amounts, a fee-free OPay or PalmPay naira deposit is far cheaper.

Larger deposit: 200 USDT

The same $2.20 to $4.40 fee is about 1% to 2% of a 200 USDT deposit, and under 1% if you rent energy. This is where USDT starts to make sense, especially if you already hold it.

Withdrawing winnings

You stake the naira equivalent of 50 USDT and your total return is 150 USDT, so your net winnings are 100 USDT. A Lagos-licensed operator deducts 5% withholding tax on that net win (5 USDT equivalent), leaving 145 USDT to withdraw. If you later sell USDT for more than you paid, the gain may also be taxable under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

Crypto-first brands are the hardest to check, because many operate globally under offshore licences and only some have Nigerian entities. Three examples show why the register matters:

• 1xBet: the Lagos licence belongs to Beauforbet Nigeria Limited and covers 1xbet.ng. The global 1xbet.com site isn’t covered.
• BC.Game: it launched a Nigerian site, bcbet.ng, in April 2026 claiming a Lagos licence, iGaming Business reported, and Goal now cites an Ekiti State licence through Blockdance Africa. But we didn’t find it on the LSLGA register on 26 October 2026, so we don’t rank it.
• Stake: named on Lagos’s list of unlicensed operators in September 2026.

Licences in Lagos last a year, so a brand’s status can change. Before depositing USDT, search the LSLGA register for the operator’s company or trade name and check that today’s date falls within its licence period.

💱 Turning USDT winnings into naira

If you withdraw winnings in USDT, you’ll probably want naira eventually. The usual route is to send the USDT to a regulated exchange in your own name and sell it there, or use a P2P marketplace. Keep in mind:

• Use your own verified account. Regulated platforms require full KYC, including BVN, Nairacompare reports.
