Best Betting Sites in South Africa for October 2026: Licensed Bookmakers
The best betting sites in South Africa right now are Betway, Hollywoodbets and Sportingbet. All three are licensed bookmakers regulated by a South African provincial gambling board, take deposits in rand through instant EFT, cards or vouchers, and offer football, rugby and horse racing betting.
Below you’ll find our ranking of eight licensed South African bookmakers, the welcome offers we could confirm, how FICA verification and payouts work, and what the law says about online sports betting in 2026. This guide covers sports and horse racing betting only: online casino games are not licensed under South African national law.
AffSupreme Editorial Team Updated October 20, 2026 · Licence data checked against provincial board registers and operator licence disclosures
Advertising disclosure: AffSupreme may earn a commission when you sign up through links on this page. This never changes our ranking criteria, and we only list bookmakers licensed by a South African provincial gambling board. Gambling is for adults 18+ and involves risk. Winners know when to stop.
📌 Key takeaways
Online sports and horse racing betting is legal in South Africa with a bookmaker licensed by one of the nine provincial gambling boards. Online casino, poker and bingo remain prohibited under the National Gambling Act, 2004.
Every bookmaker in our top 8 holds a provincial licence, most of them from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board or the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator.
Sportingbet has the biggest welcome package we could confirm: up to R15,000 across your first three deposits.
Recreational bettors don’t pay tax on winnings. A proposed 20% national tax on online gambling revenue would be paid by operators, and it isn’t law yet.
Free help is available 24/7 from the National Responsible Gambling Programme on 0800 006 008.

🇿🇦 Top 8 licensed bookmakers in South Africa (October 2026)
Our ranking puts licensing first, then the value and fairness of the welcome offer, sports and racing coverage, rand payments and payout speed, the mobile experience and responsible gambling tools. Every bookmaker below holds a licence from a South African provincial gambling board; one provincial licence lets an online bookmaker accept bettors from anywhere in the country.
ℹ️ About casino-style games: several licensed bookmakers also offer slot-style and crash games, which they frame as “betting on contingencies”. The legal status of these products is disputed between regulators, and the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in October 2025 that Gauteng bookmakers may not offer bets on live roulette. This guide reviews these brands as sportsbooks only.

🔎 Detailed reviews of the best betting sites in South Africa
Each review covers the licence, the welcome offer and its key conditions, sports and racing markets, rand payments and FICA, the app and support, and who the bookmaker suits best. We focus on what matters to South African bettors: a licence you can verify, quick verification, payouts to your bank or a cash-send service, and bonus terms you can actually clear.
1. Betway review: the best all-round bookmaker
★★★★★9.4/10
🛡️ Licences: WCGRB 10181496-012 and Mpumalanga Economic Regulator 9-2-1-09658
🎁 Welcome offer: R10 free bet plus extras, from a R50 deposit
💳 Withdrawals: EFT, FNB eWallet, Absa CashSend, Standard Bank Instant Money and more
📱 App: Android, iPhone and Huawei
Overview and licence
Betway is our top pick for October 2026. It holds two provincial licences, from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (10181496-012) and the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (9-2-1-09658), so it’s one of the best-regulated online bookmakers in the country. It combines a big sportsbook with a polished app and some of the smoothest account verification around: independent testers had their FICA check cleared in about 30 minutes through an automated database check.
🎁 Welcome offer
New customers receive a R10 free bet on sports plus a few extras after depositing at least R50. You have up to seven days after registering to make that deposit, or the offer lapses, and it can take up to ten minutes to appear. It’s a small offer compared with the deposit matches at Sportingbet or 10bet, but it’s simple and comes with no complicated playthrough on a large sum. With free bets, you keep the profit but not the stake, and cashing out your balance can void any unused free bets.
⚽ Markets
Betway’s sportsbook covers the major sports South Africans bet on, with live betting, and its app is available for Android, iPhone and Huawei devices.
💳 Deposits and withdrawals
Betway has one of the widest payment menus in South Africa. You can deposit with Visa or Mastercard, bank transfer, instant EFT (including Ozow, SiD and PayFast), OTT and 1ForYou vouchers, Skrill, PayPal, Neteller and crypto. Withdrawals can go to your bank by EFT or through FNB eWallet, Absa CashSend, Standard Bank Instant Money, Nedbank Send-iMali and e-wallets. The minimum deposit for the welcome offer is R50, and instant EFT and e-wallet deposits land straight away.
💬 Support
Support runs 24/7 on live chat, in the app, by phone and by email, and testers reached a human on chat in under 30 seconds.
✅ Pros
✅ Licensed in two provinces
✅ Huge choice of payment methods
✅ Quick automated FICA
✅ 24/7 support
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Small welcome offer
⚠️ Cashing out can void unused free bets
Best for: bettors who want a trusted, well-regulated bookmaker with every way to pay and get paid.
🎁 Welcome offer: R25 sign-up free bet, no deposit, code HOLLYREG
💳 Deposits: instant EFT, Ozow, PayFast, Peach Payments, vouchers and more
📶 Standout: Data Free Mode and horse racing live streams
Overview and licence
Hollywoodbets, run by Hollywoodbets Holdings (Pty) Ltd, is one of South Africa’s best-known betting brands, with roots in horse racing and a retail presence alongside its online sportsbook. It holds licences in several provinces, including a master licence from the KwaZulu-Natal board, a Western Cape licence (10000107-029), Gauteng and the Eastern Cape (ECBM 012-01).
🎁 Welcome offer
New customers aged 18 and over get a R25 sign-up free bet with no deposit needed, using the promo code HOLLYREG. The R25 must be bet once on sports markets at minimum odds of 0.5 (5/10) within 24 hours of being credited, and the maximum you can withdraw from the offer is R1,200. It’s one of the few genuinely no-deposit offers from a licensed South African bookmaker, which makes it a low-risk way to try the site.
🏇 Markets and features
Hollywoodbets covers more than 25 sports and is particularly strong on horse racing, with live streaming of races. Its Data Free Mode lets you use the site without eating into your mobile data, which is a real advantage for many South African bettors. It also runs a Soccer Money Back refund on qualifying multi-bets, capped at R5,000.
💳 Deposits and withdrawals
You can deposit through methods including Nedbank Direct EFT, Ozow, PayFast, PayU, Peach Payments, Zapper, SiD EFT and voucher options such as OTT. In independent testing, an OTT voucher deposit worked smoothly and a withdrawal to Standard Bank Instant Money arrived in about three hours.
📱 App and FICA
An Android app is available, and the mobile site works on any phone. You can upload FICA documents without logging in through the “Upload FICA Now” option; testers were verified in about two hours using a selfie scan. The interface looks dated compared with Betway or Sportingbet.
✅ Pros
✅ R25 free bet with no deposit
✅ Licensed in several provinces
✅ Data Free Mode
✅ Horse racing live streams
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ No large deposit match
⚠️ Dated interface
Best for: horse racing fans and new bettors who want to try a licensed site without depositing first.
3. Sportingbet review: the biggest welcome package
★★★★½9.0/10
🛡️ Licence: WCGRB 10125193-011 (Entain group)
💰 Welcome package: up to R15,000 across three deposits
📺 Live: in-play betting with live streaming
📱 App: iOS and Android
Overview and licence
Sportingbet is part of Entain, one of the world’s biggest betting groups, and is licensed in South Africa by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board under licence 10125193-011. It brings an international-style sportsbook to the local market, with live streaming and apps for iOS and Android.
💰 Welcome package
New customers can claim up to R15,000 in bonus funds spread across their first three deposits, from a minimum deposit of R50. The first deposit is matched 100% up to R5,000; the second and third deposits earn smaller percentage matches, each capped at R5,000. You must make your first qualifying deposit within three days of registering. The wagering is demanding: 10x at minimum total odds of 1.7, within 60 days, and no single bet can count for more than 20% of the requirement. It’s the biggest package in our ranking, but only worth chasing if you bet regularly.
⚽ Markets
Sportingbet covers football, rugby, tennis and plenty of niche sports, with live betting and live streaming on selected events.
💳 Payments and support
Several deposit methods are available, including crypto, and withdrawals typically take one to three business days depending on the method. Support runs 24/7 on live chat and email, and responsible gambling tools include deposit limits and self-exclusion.
✅ Pros
✅ Up to R15,000 welcome package
✅ Live streaming
✅ iOS and Android apps
✅ 24/7 live chat
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ 10x wagering at odds of 1.7
⚠️ Withdrawals can take up to three business days
Best for: regular bettors who will make several deposits and want the biggest bonus pot.
10bet is an established international brand with a dedicated South African site, licensed through the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. Its strength is a steady stream of promotions for existing customers on top of a large welcome bonus.
💰 Welcome bonus
New customers can claim a first-deposit bonus worth up to R5,000, from a qualifying deposit of R50. On sports and horse racing, the bonus carries a wagering requirement on bets at minimum odds of 2.00, and free, voided and cashed-out bets don’t count. The match percentage has changed during 2026, so check the current rate before you deposit. Withdrawing before you’ve cleared the wagering forfeits the bonus.
🔁 Ongoing promotions
10bet runs a 10% weekly cashback of up to R1,000 for opted-in players who bet on sports from Friday to Sunday, a Sunday deposit bonus and a Top 6 Correct Scores jackpot with a top prize of up to R175,000.
💳 Payments and FICA
Deposits work with Ozow instant EFT and other methods, including crypto, and withdrawals go to your bank by EFT. Note that 10bet blocks deposits until your account is verified, and testers were asked for a bank statement at withdrawal; their bank EFT payout took around 18 hours.
📱 App and support
Apps are available for Android and iPhone. Support runs on live chat, WhatsApp, email and a loyalty desk.
✅ Pros
✅ Bonus up to R5,000
✅ 10% weekend cashback
✅ Correct Scores jackpot
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Deposits blocked until verified
⚠️ Bonus odds of 2.00 or higher
⚠️ Banner-heavy interface
Best for: weekend football bettors who’ll use cashback and regular promotions.
🛡️ Licence: SA Sportsbook (Pty) Ltd, WCGRB 10180204-013
💰 Welcome bonus: 100% up to R3,000, from R20
📱 App: Android, iPhone and Huawei
💬 Support: chat, WhatsApp, phone, web portal
Overview and licence
YesPlay is a South African bookmaker operated by SA Sportsbook (Pty) Ltd, which appears on the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board’s list of licensed bookmakers with licence 10180204-013.
💰 Welcome bonus
New customers can get a 100% match on their first deposit up to R3,000, with a qualifying deposit of just R20, one of the lowest entry points for a full match in our ranking. The bonus expires after seven days, so plan to use it straight away.
💳 Payments and FICA
Testers deposited through Peach Payments and withdrew by direct EFT, which took about 24 hours. FICA documents are uploaded through a portal and were cleared in about an hour. One catch: YesPlay charged a R20 fee after two cash-outs in the same week.
📱 App and support
Apps are available for Android, iPhone and Huawei, and support covers live chat, WhatsApp, phone and a web portal. On a weak mobile signal, the browser version stuttered in testing.
✅ Pros
✅ 100% match up to R3,000
✅ Qualifying deposit from R20
✅ Apps for every major platform
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ R20 fee after two cash-outs a week
⚠️ Seven-day bonus expiry
Best for: new bettors who want a full deposit match without putting much money down.
🤝 Owners: KingMakers and MultiChoice joint venture
💳 Payments: Mastercard deposits, Ozow Fast EFT payouts
💬 Support: live chat with a human in under a minute
Overview and licence
SuperSportBet is a joint venture between KingMakers and MultiChoice, the group behind SuperSport, and it’s licensed by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (10191097). SuperSportBet (Pty) Ltd also appears on the Board’s list of licensed bookmakers.
🎁 Welcome offer
New customers can claim a welcome offer, but the figures we found differed between sources this year, so we don’t quote one. Independent testers reported that the sportsbook offer is wagered three times within 14 days at minimum odds of 3.00, which pushes you towards riskier selections. Read the current terms carefully before opting in.
💳 Payments and FICA
Testers deposited by Mastercard and withdrew through Ozow Fast EFT, which took about 24 hours. FICA uploads in the app were cleared in about an hour. There’s no mobile-money style cash-send payout option.
📱 App and support
Apps are available for Android, iPhone and Huawei. Live chat is a highlight: testers reached a human in under a minute.
✅ Pros
✅ WCGRB licence
✅ Apps for every major platform
✅ Fast human live chat
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Bonus needs odds of 3.00+
⚠️ No cash-send withdrawals
Best for: bettors who value responsive support and a big local sports brand.
Easybet is operated by Easybet Group (Pty) Ltd, which holds licences from both the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (10191733-004) and the Eastern Cape Gambling Board (ECBM 029, issued on 1 April 2025).
🎁 Welcome offer
Easybet combines a sign-up free bet with a first-deposit match. The maximum match amount differs between sources, so we don’t quote a figure; check the current offer before you deposit.
💳 Payments and FICA
Testers deposited with a 1Voucher and withdrew to FNB eWallet in about two hours, one of the faster payouts in our ranking. The catch is verification: Easybet locked betting until a manual FICA check was complete, which took about four hours.
📱 App and support
An Android app and a web version are available, and support runs on live chat, email and WhatsApp. Testers found football markets harder to find than on bigger sites.
✅ Pros
✅ Licensed in two provinces
✅ Fast FNB eWallet payouts
✅ WhatsApp support
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Betting locked until FICA clears
⚠️ Football markets harder to find
Best for: voucher users who want quick eWallet payouts.

🛡️ Licence: Portapa 2 (Pty) Ltd t/a Supabets, MER 9-2-1-00055
Supabets is operated by Portapa 2 (Pty) Ltd and licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator under licence 9-2-1-00055.
🎁 Welcome offer
New customers can claim deposit bonuses, but the amounts quoted differ between sources this year, so we don’t print a figure. Independent testers noted that bonus funds expire if they’re not moved into your main wallet within 15 days.
💳 Payments and FICA
Testers deposited with a Blu Voucher and withdrew through Nedbank Send-iMali, which took about 12 hours. FICA is checked manually and took 12 to 24 hours, and the withdrawal screen is buried in the menus.
📱 App and support
An Android app is available. Support is by email, callback and WhatsApp, with no live chat.
✅ Pros
✅ Mpumalanga licence

🧪 How we rank betting sites in South Africa
A good ranking starts with the dull but essential question: is the bookmaker licensed to take bets from South Africans? Only after that do bonuses and features matter. Here’s how we weigh each factor when we build this list of the best betting sites in South Africa.
30%
🛡️ Licence and safety. We check each bookmaker’s provincial licence against the board’s published licence holders or the licence number the operator displays, cross-checked with independent reviewers. Offshore sites without a South African licence don’t make the list, however big the bonus.
20%
💰 Bonus value and fairness. We only quote offers we could confirm from more than one reliable source, and we weigh the size of the reward against the wagering, minimum odds and deadlines.
20%
⚽ Markets. Football, rugby, cricket and horse racing coverage, live betting and extras such as streaming.
15%
💳 Payments and payouts. Instant EFT, cards, vouchers and cash-send withdrawals, plus how long FICA and payouts take in practice.
10%
📱 Mobile experience. Apps for Android, iPhone and Huawei, data-light modes and how the site works on a weak signal.
5%
🧘 Responsible gambling. Deposit limits, self-exclusion and clear 18+ messaging.
ℹ️ Our scores are editorial judgements based on these criteria and on publicly available information, including payout and FICA tests published by independent reviewers in May 2026. We haven’t run our own deposit or withdrawal tests for this update.
⚖️ Is online betting legal in South Africa?
Yes, for sports and horse racing betting with a licensed bookmaker. Online casino games are a different story. Here’s what South African law says in 2026.
Provincial licences, national rules
South Africa has no national online betting licence. The National Gambling Board, an agency of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, oversees the sector and keeps national registers, while nine provincial boards issue bookmaker licences, collect gambling taxes and supervise operators. A bookmaker licensed in one province, such as the Western Cape or Mpumalanga, can take online bets from customers across the country. At 31 March 2025, the National Gambling Board counted 315 licensed bookmakers, retail and online combined.
Online casino is not legal
Section 11 of the National Gambling Act, 2004 prohibits unauthorised “interactive games”, which covers online casino, poker and bingo. A 2008 amendment that would have licensed interactive gambling never came into operation, so there’s no route to a legal online casino licence. Under the Act, playing at an unlicensed online casino is itself an offence, and penalties for illegal gambling can reach R10 million, ten years in prison, or both.
Casino-style games at bookmakers
Some licensed bookmakers offer slot-style and crash games framed as bets on “contingencies”. Regulators disagree about whether that’s allowed. On 21 October 2025, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that Gauteng bookmakers may not offer bets on live roulette, while the Western Cape board says the ruling doesn’t apply to its legislation. The National Gambling Board’s position is that casino-style bookmaker products breach section 11 everywhere.
Changes on the way
The National Gambling Policy Council has resolved to fast-track a new national gambling Bill to bring national and provincial rules into line, and it’s expected to go to Cabinet later in 2026. The National Gambling Board has also invited proposals for a system to monitor and block illegal gambling websites, and on 17 September 2026 it announced a partnership with the Advertising Regulatory Board to monitor gambling adverts.
⚠️ The National Gambling Board told Parliament in October 2025 that most illegal online operators targeting South Africans hold licences from Curaçao. A Curaçao licence doesn’t make a site legal in South Africa. In August 2026, a national Illegal Gambling Task Team began operations in Limpopo, with plans to extend to all nine provinces.
🧾 Betting tax in South Africa
Here’s the position for bettors in October 2026.
✅
No tax on your winnings
There’s no tax on betting winnings for recreational bettors in South Africa. A 15% withholding tax was proposed back in 2011 but never introduced. If you bet systematically as a business, the income may be taxable, so speak to a tax adviser in that case.
🏢
Provincial taxes on operators
Bookmakers pay gambling tax to their provincial board. In Gauteng, bookmakers pay 6.5% of gross betting revenue, while the Western Cape charges a 3% tax plus a 3% betting levy on winning bets.
📄
Proposed 20% national tax
National Treasury floated a 20% national tax on online gambling revenue in a discussion paper published on 25 November 2025. It would be paid by operators, not deducted from your winnings. Comments closed on 27 February 2026, and it wasn’t among the key proposals in the draft tax bills published on 30 July 2026.
📉
Why it matters to you
Operator taxes don’t come off your payouts directly, but higher taxes can mean tighter odds and smaller promotions over time.
🎁 Betting bonuses in South Africa explained
South African bookmakers compete hard on welcome offers. These are the main types you’ll meet at the best betting sites in South Africa, with real examples from our ranking.
🆓
No-deposit free bet
Hollywoodbets gives new customers a R25 free bet without a deposit, to be bet once at minimum odds of 0.5 within 24 hours.
💰
Deposit match
YesPlay matches 100% up to R3,000 from a R20 deposit, and 10bet’s first-deposit bonus is worth up to R5,000.
📦
Multi-deposit packages
Sportingbet spreads up to R15,000 across your first three deposits, with 10x wagering at odds of 1.7 within 60 days.
🎟️

🔁
Cashback
10bet refunds 10% of weekend sports bets, up to R1,000 a week, for opted-in players.
🎯
Jackpots
10bet’s Top 6 Correct Scores jackpot pays up to R175,000 for predicting six scorelines.
ℹ️ Wagering in plain words: with Sportingbet’s first-deposit match, a R1,000 deposit earns a R1,000 bonus. At 10x wagering you’d need to place R10,000 in qualifying bets at total odds of 1.7 or higher within 60 days, and no single bet can count for more than 20% of that. Many bettors are better off with a smaller offer they can actually clear.

South Africans have more ways to pay than bettors in most African markets. These are the methods we confirmed at the bookmakers in our ranking.

💡 Expert betting tips and common mistakes
✅ Do this
Check the provincial licence number before depositing.
Finish FICA before you need to withdraw.
Compare wagering, not just headline bonus amounts.
Use a bank account or wallet in your own name.
Set deposit limits and a weekly budget.
❌ Avoid this
Offshore sites with only a Curaçao licence.
Online casino sites; they aren’t legal in South Africa.
Chasing losses with longer accumulators.
Borrowing money or using credit to bet.
Opening several accounts to claim one bonus again.
🧘 Responsible gambling in South Africa
Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and remember: winners know when to stop.
Warning signs
Thinking about betting all the time or planning the next bet.
Chasing losses or borrowing money to bet.
Hiding betting from family or lying about how much you spend.
Betting to escape stress or bad feelings.
Missing work, studies or family commitments because of betting.
Tools that help
Licensed bookmakers must offer deposit limits and self-exclusion. South Africa also keeps a mandatory National Register of Excluded Persons: under rules gazetted on 10 February 2026, an exclusion takes effect ten days after it’s submitted and applies across licensed operators.
Where to get support
The National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free, confidential counselling. Call the toll-free helpline on 0800 006 008, or send “Help” by WhatsApp or SMS to 076 675 0710.
🔞 18+ only. Bookmakers must take reasonable steps to stop minors from gambling. Never let anyone under 18 use your account.

Among the offers we could confirm from more than one source, Sportingbet has the largest: up to R15,000 across your first three deposits, with 10x wagering at minimum odds of 1.7.
Is online sports betting legal in South Africa?
Yes, with a bookmaker licensed by one of the nine provincial gambling boards. A licence from one province lets a bookmaker accept online bets from across South Africa.

🚫 Brands we left out of this ranking
Some well-known names don’t appear above. Here’s why.
Offshore brands such as 1xBet, 22Bet and Melbet: we found no South African provincial licence for them. The National Gambling Board says most illegal online operators targeting South Africans are licensed in Curaçao.
Online casinos: online casino isn’t legal under the National Gambling Act, so we don’t list casino sites.
SportPesa: licensed by the WCGRB, but independent testers recorded the slowest payout of the brands they tested (up to 72 hours), email-only support and no iOS app.
Betfred, World Sports Betting, Sunbet, Playabets, Gbets and others: we couldn’t confirm enough current offer and payment details from more than one source to review them fairly this month.
🏁 Final verdict: the best betting sites in South Africa
South Africa has one of the most developed licensed betting markets in Africa. Online sports and horse racing betting is legal with a provincially licensed bookmaker, winnings aren’t taxed for recreational bettors, and you can pay by instant EFT, card or voucher and withdraw to your bank or a cash-send service. Online casino remains illegal, and regulators are stepping up action against offshore sites, so the licence check matters more than ever.
For most bettors, Betway is the best betting site in South Africa: licensed in two provinces, with a huge payment menu, quick FICA and 24/7 support. Hollywoodbets is the pick for horse racing and a no-deposit free bet, Sportingbet has the biggest welcome package, and 10bet and YesPlay are strong choices for deposit matches.
Whichever bookmaker you choose, finish FICA early, read the wagering before you claim a bonus, and set a deposit limit before your first bet.
