Yes. Sports betting and online casino games are legal in Ghana when you use an operator licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, and you must be 18 or older. Here’s what Ghanaian bettors need to know in 2026.
The Gaming Act, 2006 and the Gaming Commission
The Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721) created the Gaming Commission of Ghana, which reports to the Minister for the Interior and regulates games of chance other than the National Lotto. Only licensed limited liability companies may run games of chance, licences can’t be transferred and they’re renewed every year. Operating without a licence is a criminal offence. The Act itself predates online betting, so the Commission licenses online sports betting and online casino as separate product licences.
The 2026 licence register
The Commission publishes its register of licensed operators online. For 2026, the online and land-based licences on the register were issued on 1 January 2026 and expire on 31 December 2026, with separate rows for sports betting, online casino, remote interactive games and land-based casinos. All eight brands in our ranking are on it.
Identity checks and anti-money laundering
Licensed operators must verify customers with the Ghana Card, and a 2025 agreement with the National Identification Authority allows biometric checks. Betting companies are also accountable institutions under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), and in July 2025 the Commission and the Financial Intelligence Centre held a national workshop on risk-based supervision ahead of the 2026 evaluation of the sector.
Advertising rules
The Commission’s advertising guidelines require every gaming advert to be approved in advance, to name the Gaming Commission as regulator and to carry warnings such as “Gamble Responsibly”, “only 18 years +” and “Gambling is addictive”. Operators can’t use celebrities in ads, can’t advertise on radio or TV at prime time and can’t place adverts within 200 metres of schools or children’s playgrounds.
Changes on the way
A Legislative Instrument to put the Gaming Act into practice was submitted for approval in 2025, and work began that year on amending the Act to deal with digital platforms. Neither had been passed when we checked.

In January 2025 the Gaming Commission asked the National Communications Authority to restrict access to 11 unauthorised gaming websites, and during 2025 it blocked the payment platforms of ten illegal online sports betting operators.
