🛡️ Licences: are SportyBet and Betway legal in Ghana?

Yes, both are. The Gaming Commission of Ghana (GCG) publishes an annual list of licensed operators, and its 2026 list includes both Betway and SportyBet for sports betting and online casino. All 2026 licences were issued on 1 January 2026 and expire on 31 December 2026, so both brands will need to appear on the 2027 list. Under Section 13 of the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721), no one may run a game of chance business in Ghana without a licence, FocusGN noted in March 2026.

On licensing alone, it’s a tie. The difference lies in what sits behind each brand.

🏢 Who’s behind each brand?

Betway Ghana

Betway’s Ghanaian business is Sports Betting Group Ghana Limited, based in Adabraka, Accra, and part of Super Group, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Betway marked a decade in Ghana in June 2026 with a campaign called “It’s Your Ten” (“Wo Mmre Adu” in Twi). “Reaching 10 years in Ghana is an important milestone for us,” said Jason Kramer, Managing Director at Super Group Africa, according to MyJoyOnline.

Unusually for an online bookmaker, Betway also has a physical presence. In February 2025, it opened a customer experience centre in Sunyani, in the Bono Region, with big-screen sports, branch-only offers and guided support for new players, 3News reported. Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, a Betway ambassador, attended the opening. Betway is also the Official Development Partner of the Ghana Women’s Premier League, under a sponsorship with the Ghana Football Association.

SportyBet Ghana

SportyBet is part of the Sporty Group, which also runs SportyTV and, since 20 January 2025, SportyFM, described as Ghana’s first 24/7 sports radio station, on 106.1 FM in Accra. It’s led by Gary Al-Smith, Sporty Group’s Regional Content Lead for Ghana. SportyFM was named “Emerging Brand of the Year” at the 2025 Ghana Business Awards, according to Modern Ghana. TheGameHaus lists SportyBet as licensed in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Zambia. In Nigeria, Blask ranked SportyBet first by “Brand’s Accumulated Power” in July 2026, with a 41.34% share, FocusGN reported.

Betway’s listed parent and decade in the market give it the edge on corporate transparency. SportyBet’s strength is its scale across Africa and its deep investment in Ghanaian sports media.

⚖️ Ghana’s betting rules that apply to both

• Age: 18 or over.
• No tax on winnings: Ghana abolished the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings with effect from 2 April 2025, so neither bookmaker deducts tax from your payouts.
• Verification: licensed operators must check your identity, usually with your Ghana Card, under Ghana’s anti-money laundering rules.
• Self-exclusion: available through operators and the GCG; iGaming Times reported 127 self-exclusions in 2025.
• Complaints: if either bookmaker doesn’t resolve an issue, you can escalate to the GCG.

📈 Market position in Ghana and Africa

Ghana is one of Africa’s fastest-growing betting markets. Online gross win reached $903.5 million in 2025, up 24% from $729.8 million a year earlier, according to H2 Gambling Capital, cited by iGaming Business. FocusGN cited industry research projecting Ghana’s whole gambling market at about $915.9 million in 2025.

Both are among the biggest betting brands in Africa. Betway’s Ghanaian app downloads and decade in the market suggest a large local base; SportyBet’s continental scale and Sporty Group’s Ghanaian media presence point the same way.

🔍 Betway Ghana promotions in detail

• 1Up, 2Up and 3Up: early payout when your team goes one, two or three goals ahead, with a 48-hour window, according to MightyTips.
• Free Bet Club: stake GHS 250 a week on accumulators of three or more selections at total odds of 3.00+ (each leg at 1.15+) and receive two GHS 25 free bets.
• Bet Influencer: share your slips; when other players copy them, you earn a 4% commission, subject to limits.
• Saturday Soccer Jackpot: a weekly football prediction jackpot.
• Daily Free Spins: qualifying terms differ by source: a GHS 25 bet at odds of 1.50, or multiples totalling GHS 50.
• Aviator Legends: a crash-game tournament with a GHS 500,000 prize pool, per BetRank GH.

BetRank GH also notes that some promotions have been discontinued, so check what’s live in the app before planning around a particular offer.

What Free Bet Club is worth

To earn GHS 50 in free bets, you stake GHS 250 on accumulators. If the bookmaker’s average margin on those slips is around 11% (roughly what three legs at a 4% margin each add up to), the expected cost of the qualifying bets is about GHS 28. The GHS 50 in free bets is worth less than face value, because a free bet’s stake isn’t returned: at odds of 2.00, a GHS 25 free bet is worth roughly GHS 12 to GHS 13 on average. So the club returns a small positive value for players who already bet GHS 250 a week, but it isn’t a reason to bet more.

In Nigeria, SportyBet also offers One Cut, 2UP and a Live Odds Boost, according to our SportyBet Nigeria research. We couldn’t confirm these for Ghana, so check the app.

📶 Data-free, SMS and USSD betting

For players with little data, both brands have options. AfricaSoccer reports zero-rated access to Betway through betway.datafree.co on participating Ghanaian networks, and Adom Online described Betway’s SMS and USSD betting in 2025. SportyBet’s Android app is described as data-light by AfricaSoccer. If data costs matter to you, Betway’s data-free route is the most complete option we found, though BetRank GH and Goal disagree on whether its app has a data-free mode.

🎁 Welcome offers: SportyBet vs Betway Ghana

This is the messiest part of the comparison. For both bookmakers, reputable sources describe different welcome offers in 2026, so we show each version and recommend checking the promotions page on the day you sign up.

Betway Ghana welcome offer

Goal’s page also names a sign-up code, while MightyTips says no code is needed. You don’t need to hunt for codes: if a code is required, it will be shown on Betway’s own registration page.

SportyBet Ghana welcome offer

In Nigeria, SportyBet has no welcome bonus, according to ChampsBase. In Ghana, the offer appears to change, so check before you deposit.

Welcome bonus maths

Take Goal’s version of Betway’s offer: up to GHS 200 in free bets, used at odds of 3.0 or more, with 3x wagering. A GHS 200 free bet placed at odds of 3.0 returns GHS 400 in winnings if it wins (the stake isn’t returned), but odds of 3.0 imply roughly a one-in-three chance before margin. On average, then, a GHS 200 free bet at 3.0 is worth around GHS 120 to GHS 125, before any wagering on the winnings.

AfricaSoccer’s version of SportyBet’s offer, 150% up to GHS 500 in free bets, would give GHS 150 in free bets on a GHS 100 deposit. Without published odds and wagering terms, we can’t value it precisely, but the same rule applies: free bets are worth noticeably less than their face value.

🏟️ Ghana football and community

Betway’s investment is in clubs, the women’s game and in-person centres; SportyBet’s is in sports media. Neither is a reason to choose a bookmaker, but both show long-term commitment to the Ghanaian market.

🔁 Ongoing promotions compared

Betway has the wider range of promotions: something for accumulator players, casual punters, casino players and social bettors. SportyBet has fewer promotions but a stronger headline accumulator bonus, and its Flexi Bet suits players who build long slips.

SportyBet’s Multiple Bet Bonus rules

According to TheGameHaus, SportyBet’s bonus applies to slips of two or more selections across sports and live betting, with every selection at odds of 1.20 or more. If you cash out your full stake, you get no bonus; if you cash out part of it, the bonus is calculated on the stake that’s still active. The percentage rises with the number of selections, up to 1,000%, so check the in-app table for the exact rate for your slip.

Why big accumulator boosts rarely pay

Both bookmakers’ boosts are paid only when every leg wins. If each selection has a 60% chance of winning, the chance of the whole slip winning drops fast:

A 1,000% boost sounds huge, but it typically needs a very long slip. Use boosts on the slips you’d place anyway, rather than adding legs to reach a higher tier.

⚽ Sportsbook and live betting

For watching and betting at the same time, Betway is ahead: live streaming of selected matches, Build a Bet and early-payout offers make it the stronger in-play product. SportyBet keeps things simple and fast, which suits players who mainly build pre-match accumulators on their phones.

Odds and margins

We didn’t find a published Ghanaian odds comparison between the two. For Betway Ghana, sources give margins of roughly 4.5% to 5.5% or 5% to 8%, depending on the source. In Nigeria, ChampsBase measured SportyBet’s Premier League margin at about 5.1%, compared with 6.1% at Bet9ja. If you bet often, compare prices on both apps before placing a big slip: a few hundredths on each leg add up over a season.

Ghana Premier League betting

Both bookmakers cover the Ghana Premier League. Nigerian Matchday counted 25 to 30 markets on a typical GPL match at Betway, fewer than on European fixtures. Betway also covers AFCON qualifiers and CAF club competitions, according to Nigerian Matchday.

🎰 Casino and Aviator

Both bookmakers hold GCG online casino licences, so their casino games are licensed in Ghana.

• Betway: Spribe’s Aviator, FlyX, slots such as Hot Hot Betway, Daily Free Spins and the Aviator Legends tournament with a GHS 500,000 prize pool, according to BetRank GH.
• SportyBet: Aviator and Instant Virtuals, according to AfricaSoccer. Its App Store listing mentions an in-house casino.

Crash games are quick and easy to overspend on. With a typical 97% return to player, the chance of reaching a 2x cash-out is about 48.5%, and a 10x cash-out about 9.7%. No app or Telegram “signal” can predict a round.

💳 Deposits: MoMo, Telecel and AirtelTigo

How to deposit with MTN MoMo

1. Log in and tap Deposit.
2. Choose MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash or AirtelTigo Money.
3. Enter the amount (from GHS 1) and confirm.
4. Approve the prompt on your phone with your MoMo PIN.
5. Your balance should update within seconds; if not, check your wallet history.

AfricaSoccer’s tip for SportyBet applies to both: register and deposit with the same mobile number, so withdrawals go back to a wallet in your name without problems.

💸 Withdrawals: which pays faster?

Both pay to mobile money quickly once your account is verified. In Nigeria, ChampsBase found SportyBet’s OPay withdrawals arrived in under a minute, which suggests its payment system is among the fastest in Africa; we didn’t find a timed Ghanaian test for either brand. The bigger factor for both is verification: complete it with your Ghana Card before you need to withdraw.

How to withdraw to MoMo (both bookmakers)

1. Verify your account with your Ghana Card before your first withdrawal.
2. Open Withdraw in the app or on the website.
3. Choose the mobile money wallet registered in your name.
4. Enter the amount and confirm.
5. Check your MoMo balance; at Betway, allow 15 to 20 minutes at weekends.

No tax is deducted from winnings in Ghana, so the amount you request is the amount you should receive, minus any network charges.

🔢 Why small odds differences matter

Suppose you place 100 bets of GHS 20 over a season, each at odds about 0.05 higher at one bookmaker than the other (for example, 1.95 instead of 1.90). If you win half of them, the difference in returns is 50 winning bets × GHS 20 × 0.05 = GHS 50. On accumulators, small differences multiply across legs, so the gap grows. That’s why, in any SportyBet vs Betway decision, it’s worth checking both apps’ prices on the matches you bet most, rather than relying on general margin figures.
