Sportingbet South Africa Review 2026: R15,000 Welcome Bonus, Licence, Live Streaming and Payouts
Sportingbet is the South African arm of one of the world’s best-known betting brands. Founded in the UK in 1997 and now part of Entain, the owner of Ladbrokes, Coral and bwin, it has operated in South Africa under the Sportingbet name since October 2010, when the local site GreatOdds.co.za was rebranded. Today it offers one of the biggest welcome packages in the country, an international-style sportsbook with live streaming, and native apps for Android and iPhone.
This Sportingbet review covers its sports and horse racing betting: the welcome bonus and its wagering terms, ongoing promotions, markets and streaming, deposits and withdrawals, FICA, apps, support and payout limits. In line with our South Africa policy, we don’t review or promote casino-style games. Every fact was checked in October and November 2026, and where sources disagree, we show each version.
Disclosure: this review contains affiliate links to Sportingbet’s sports betting pages. We only link to bookmakers with a South African provincial licence. This review isn’t legal advice. Betting is for adults only.

⭐ Our verdict: 8.6/10
Sportingbet is one of the most complete sportsbooks in South Africa: a deep market range, real live streaming, strong accumulator promotions, high payout limits and polished apps on both Android and iPhone, backed by a global group with a WCGRB licence. Its welcome bonus is big but demanding, withdrawals go through a 24-hour review, there’s no phone support, and support isn’t round the clock. If you bet regularly on European football and tennis, it’s one of the best accounts to have.

🏢 Who runs Sportingbet South Africa?
Sportingbet’s South African story starts with GreatOdds. In February 2009, News24 reported the launch of GreatOdds.co.za from Cape Town, in partnership with Sportingbet, then described as the world’s largest bookmaker. “Sports betting in South Africa is still in its infancy,” said GreatOdds operations head Tyrone Dobbin. On 4 October 2010, GreatOdds.co.za was rebranded as Sportingbet.co.za. At the time, the operator was Netbet, licensed by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, and its CEO Cuan Chelin promised that “we will no doubt be setting the standards in the South African online bookmaking industry”.
Today, according to Afrik-foot, the South African site is run by Greatodds (Pty) Ltd, registration 1998/002434/07, from Granger Bay Court in Cape Town, and uses the Sportingbet brand under licence from Entain Operations Limited. The Sportingbet brand was founded in the UK in 1997 by Mark Blandford. Its owner, Entain plc, listed Sportingbet among its sports brands, alongside bwin, Coral and Ladbrokes, in its March 2026 annual report notice.
| Date | Milestone | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1997 | Sportingbet founded in the UK by Mark Blandford | Afrik-foot |
| February 2009 | GreatOdds.co.za launches in South Africa, partnered with Sportingbet | News24 |
| 4 October 2010 | GreatOdds.co.za becomes Sportingbet.co.za | News24 |
| March 2026 | Entain lists Sportingbet among its sports brands | Entain annual report notice |
What Entain ownership means for you
Entain is one of the world’s largest betting groups. Its March 2026 annual report notice lists its sports brands as BetCity, bwin, Coral, Crystalbet, Eurobet, Ladbrokes, Neds and Sportingbet. For South African players, that scale shows up in the product: international-standard streaming, a wide market range, Build A Bet and promotions such as 2Up that Entain brands run in other markets. Your account, however, is with Greatodds (Pty) Ltd in Cape Town, and South African rules, including FICA and the WCGRB’s oversight, apply to it. A licence held by Entain elsewhere doesn’t replace the local Western Cape licence.
One source, AfricaSoccer, describes Sportingbet South Africa as part of “the Super Group”. That doesn’t match the other records we found (Super Group owns Betway), so we’ve relied on the Entain and Greatodds information.
🛡️ Is Sportingbet licensed in South Africa?
Yes. Sportingbet is licensed as a bookmaker by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (WCGRB), South Africa’s largest licensor of online bookmakers. Greatodds also appears on a list of licence holders on the WCGRB’s website, though that page appears to date from 2022. Our sources give two versions of the licence number:
| Source | Licence details |
|---|---|
| BetScout directory (AffSupreme research, October 2026) | WCGRB 10125193-011; Entain / Greatodds |
| Afrik-foot (March 2026) | WCGRB bookmaker licence 10125193-019, valid 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2026 |
| MightyTips (February 2026) | WCGRB licence 10125193-018 |
| AfricaSoccer (July 2026) | Licensed by the WCGRB; no number given |
| Gauteng Tourism (gauteng.net, updated March 2026) | “Licensed by the Gauteng Gambling Board”; no number given |
The licence base number, 10125193, is the same in all three numbered records; the suffix probably reflects different licence periods. Afrik-foot’s stated validity ended on 31 July 2026, so check the footer of sportingbet.co.za for the current number and period before you deposit. You can also check with the WCGRB directly.
🏛️ South Africa’s betting rules in brief
The National Gambling Act 2004 sets the national framework, and the provinces license and supervise bookmakers. The National Gambling Board oversees the provincial regulators and keeps national registers.
| Rule | What it means for Sportingbet players |
|---|---|
| Minimum age 18 | Section 12(4) of the National Gambling Act |
| Provincial licences | Sportingbet is licensed in the Western Cape |
| Online casino banned | Section 11 prohibits interactive games |
| No tax on winnings | You keep the full payout; operators pay provincial taxes |
| FICA | Identity and address checks before withdrawals |
| National exclusion | The National Register of Excluded Persons applies across licensed operators |
iGaming Times counted 315 licensed bookmakers in South Africa as at 31 March 2025, so you have plenty of choice. Stay with licensed operators: the NGB has warned that winnings from illegal gambling can be forfeited.
The Supabets ruling and Sportingbet
On 21 October 2025, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in a case brought by the Casino Association of South Africa against Supabets that, under the Gauteng Gambling Act, bookmakers may not offer fixed-odds bets on casino games such as roulette. The NGB says the ruling applies to all bookmakers nationwide. The Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, which licenses Sportingbet, says “the Supabets judgement does not apply to the Western Cape province”. The ruling doesn’t affect sports or horse racing betting. Because the status of casino-style products is disputed, and a new national gambling Bill is being prepared, we review only Sportingbet’s sportsbook and don’t link to its casino.
🎁 Sportingbet review: the R15,000 welcome bonus
Sportingbet’s welcome package is one of the largest in South Africa: up to R15,000 in bonus funds across your first three deposits. That headline number is consistent across Goal, bettingexpert and Afrik-foot. AfricaSoccer’s July 2026 review instead mentions a sign-up bonus “of up to R1,000”, which may reflect an older or different offer, so check the current offer on the site.
How the welcome bonus works
| Term | Goal (October 2026) | Afrik-foot |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 1st deposit matched 100% up to R5,000; 2nd and 3rd deposits get smaller matches, each capped at R5,000 | 100% match across the first three deposits, up to R15,000, plus casino spins |
| Minimum deposit | R50 | R50 per deposit |
| Wagering | 10x at minimum total odds of 1.70 | 10x for the sports bonus |
| Time limit | 60 days; first qualifying deposit within 3 days of registering | 60 days |
| Other rules | No single bet can count for more than 20% of the wagering requirement | — |
An older structure also circulates. MightyTips, in February 2026, described 100% up to R1,000 on the first deposit, 50% up to R1,000 on the second and 75% up to R1,000 on the third, again from R50 within three days of registering. Afrik-foot’s app guide describes the current offer as a “Triple Welcome Bonus” worth up to R15,000. Because the split has changed over time, open the Promotions page and read the terms for each deposit before you pay in.
The package also includes casino free spins, which we don’t review given the legal dispute over casino-style games at South African bookmakers.
What the bonus is really worth
A 10x requirement is high. Take the first deposit: deposit R1,000, get a R1,000 bonus, and you need to place R10,000 of bets at odds of 1.70 or more before the bonus becomes withdrawable. To claim the full R15,000 across three deposits, Afrik-foot calculates R150,000 of turnover.
Every rand you bet costs, on average, the bookmaker’s margin. If the margin on your bets averaged 5%, R10,000 of wagering would cost about R500 in expected losses, against a R1,000 bonus: still positive, but only half the headline value. On R150,000 of wagering, expected losses at 5% would be about R7,500 against R15,000 of bonus. And because no single bet can count for more than 20% of the requirement, you can’t clear it with one or two big bets.
How the bonus compares with other South African offers
| Bookmaker | Welcome offer | Wagering (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Sportingbet | Up to R15,000 over 3 deposits | 10x at total odds of 1.70+, 60 days |
| Supabets | R50 free bet, then up to R5,000 over 3 deposits | Deposit bonus 5x at 2.40+ (bettingexpert) |
| 10bet | Up to R5,000 on the first deposit | Minimum odds 2.00 (bettingexpert) |
| Hollywoodbets | R25 free bet, no deposit | 1x (Goal) |
| Betway | R10 free bet after a R50 deposit | Free bet; you keep the profit, not the stake |
Sources: AffSupreme South Africa research (October to November 2026), Goal, bettingexpert.
Sportingbet’s package is the largest by far, but the free bets at Hollywoodbets and Betway cost far less to unlock. If you bet small amounts, a no-deposit or low-wagering offer will probably give you more real value; if you bet regularly and in larger amounts, Sportingbet’s package is worth more.
🔁 Sportingbet promotions for existing customers
Sportingbet’s ongoing promotions are among the strongest in South Africa, especially for accumulator and football bettors. These are the sports promotions Afrik-foot lists:
| Promotion | How it works |
|---|---|
| Multi Boost | Up to 500% extra on winning accumulators of 2+ selections, each at odds of 1.25+; payout capped at R10,000,000 |
| 2Up early payout | Your football bet is paid as a winner if your team goes two goals ahead, on 140+ leagues |
| Multi refund | On football and tennis multis of 5+ selections, your stake back as a free bet up to R500 (conditions apply) |
| Price boosts | Daily boosted odds on selected markets |
| Build A Bet boost | Place a Build A Bet with 3+ selections at combined odds of 5.00+ and a R500 minimum stake to earn a 50% odds boost token for a football Build A Bet (maximum stake R100) |
MightyTips’ February 2026 review adds detail and some differences. It describes the multi refund as “Football Multi-Insurance”: if a multi of 5+ events at odds of 1.50+ loses on one leg, you get your stake back as a free bet up to R500, with a R5 minimum stake and same-day settlement. It describes the Multi-Bet Boost as 2% to 500%, but with the boost capped at R10,000, far below the R10,000,000 payout cap Afrik-foot mentions. The two figures may describe different things (the boost amount versus the total payout), so check the terms.
MightyTips also mentions an invitation-only VIP programme with Gold and Platinum tiers.
AfricaSoccer also mentions reloads, free bets and money-back specials that rotate. Check the Promotions page for current terms, and opt in where required.
How 2Up works
2Up is one of the most useful promotions in football betting. Say you back a team to win at odds of 2.50. If they go 2–0 up, your bet is settled as a winner straight away, even if the match finishes 2–2. Afrik-foot says it applies on more than 140 leagues. It doesn’t change the odds, but it protects you against late comebacks.
Why long accumulators still lose most of the time
A 500% Multi Boost rewards long slips, but the maths works against them. If each selection has a 60% chance of winning:
| Selections (each 60% likely) | Chance the whole slip wins |
|---|---|
| 2 | 36% |
| 5 | About 7.8% |
| 10 | About 0.6% |
| 20 | About 0.004% |
Illustration: the chance of an accumulator winning is the product of each leg’s chance. Real probabilities vary by match.
Use the Multi Boost and multi refund on slips you’d place anyway, and keep most of your stakes on shorter bets.
🗓️ Your first week with Sportingbet: a sensible plan
- Day 1: register, then upload FICA documents straight away; Afrik-foot says approval takes 24 to 48 hours.
- Within 3 days: make your first qualifying deposit of at least R50 if you want the welcome bonus, choosing an amount you could wager 10 times.
- Before you bet: set a deposit limit in your account.
- First bets: try 2Up on a football match and Sportingbet TV on an event you’re watching.
- Test a withdrawal: request a small express or FNB eWallet withdrawal so you know how the 24-hour review works.
- End of week: check your wagering progress and compare your spending against your budget.
⚽ Sportingbet sportsbook
Sportingbet is at its best as a sportsbook. Afrik-foot counts 30 to 35+ sports, covering football, basketball, tennis, rugby, cricket, motorsport, American sports and niche events, with strong local coverage:
- Football: the Betway Premiership (PSL), CAF competitions, the Premier League, La Liga, the Champions League and international tournaments.
- Rugby: the United Rugby Championship, the Currie Cup and Springbok internationals.
- Cricket: SA20 and international cricket.
- Horse racing: listed by AfricaSoccer among the sports offered.
Markets go well beyond match results. AfricaSoccer lists 1X2, both teams to score, over/under goals, correct score, first goalscorer, handicaps and player props, and live betting on major football, rugby and cricket with real-time odds. Cash out is available on selected bets. Afrik-foot found no virtual sports.
Sportingbet TV: live streaming
Live streaming is one of Sportingbet’s biggest advantages over most local bookmakers. Afrik-foot lists streams of selected football leagues, including the Bundesliga, ATP and WTA tennis, the NBA, EuroLeague basketball and ice hockey. To watch, you need a positive balance or a bet placed in the last 24 hours. bettingexpert also lists live streaming among Sportingbet’s features.
Getting the most from live betting and streaming
- Watch first, bet second: Sportingbet TV lets you see how a match is going before you bet in play, but streams can lag a few seconds behind the action, so odds may move before you tap.
- Use cash out sparingly: the cash-out offer includes the bookmaker’s margin, so taking it often costs you value over time. Afrik-foot rates the app’s auto cash out as more reliable than the website’s, which helps if you set a target in advance.
- Pick your markets: live football markets on major leagues usually have tighter prices than minor events.
- Set a limit before kick-off: in-play betting is fast, and it’s easy to place more bets than you planned.
Odds and margins
MightyTips describes Sportingbet’s odds as competitive but not the best in the industry, with margins of roughly 4% to 7%. The margin is the bookmaker’s built-in edge: on a two-way market priced at 1.90 each side, the implied probabilities add up to about 105%, so the margin is about 5%. Lower margins mean better value over time. On popular football markets, a margin of around 4% is good; on niche markets and long accumulators, it’s usually higher.
The simplest way to get value at any bookmaker is to compare prices. If you hold accounts with Sportingbet and one or two rivals, check each before placing a big bet; small differences in odds add up over a season.
Payout limits
Sportingbet suits bigger bettors too. Afrik-foot reports these maximum payouts:
| Bet type | Maximum payout |
|---|---|
| General limit | R10,000,000 per player per week, and per bet |
| Major football leagues, NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL (pre-event) | R5,000,000 |
| Live betting | R5,000,000 |
| Minor sports | R250,000 |
Afrik-foot’s FAQ also mentions a R5,000,000 daily maximum, which conflicts with the weekly figure; check the current terms.
Popular markets explained
- 1X2: home win, draw or away win.
- Both Teams To Score: whether both sides score.
- Over/Under: total goals or points above or below a line.
- Handicap: one team starts with a virtual lead or deficit.
- Player props: bets on a player’s performance, such as scoring.
- Build A Bet: several markets from the same match combined on one slip.
💳 Sportingbet deposits
| Method | Minimum | Maximum | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1Voucher | None stated | R5,000 | Instant |
| Ozow (instant EFT) | R10 | R1,000,000 | Instant |
| Visa / Mastercard | R50 | R500,000 | Instant |
| Manual EFT | R100 | No limit | 1 to 3 days |
Source: Afrik-foot. AfricaSoccer gives a R10 minimum deposit; bettingexpert also lists crypto, which our other sources don’t mention.
MightyTips lists about 12 payment options, including FNB eWallet, Apple Pay, Google Pay and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin and USDT for deposits, and Skrill and Neteller for withdrawals. It gives card deposits a maximum of R36,000 per transaction and withdrawals from R50 up to R1,000,000 a day. These figures differ from Afrik-foot’s, so check the cashier for current limits.
Sportingbet charges no fees, although your bank may, according to Afrik-foot. Remember that the welcome bonus needs a deposit of at least R50.
How to deposit with Ozow
- Log in and tap Deposit.
- Choose Ozow and enter at least R10 (R50 for the welcome bonus).
- Select your bank and approve the payment in your banking app.
- Your balance updates straight away.
💸 Sportingbet withdrawals
| Method | Minimum | Speed after review |
|---|---|---|
| Express Withdrawal | R100 | Minutes |
| FNB eWallet | R100 | 1 to 24 hours |
| Visa / Mastercard | R100 | 3 to 5 business days |
All withdrawals go through a 24-hour internal review first, according to Afrik-foot, so plan on up to a day before money moves. bettingexpert gives one to three days overall. Withdrawals go to your FICA-verified account, and card withdrawals have extra conditions.
How to withdraw
- Complete FICA: your documents must be approved first.
- Check your bonus: unfinished wagering can block a withdrawal.
- Open Withdraw and choose Express Withdrawal or FNB eWallet for speed.
- Enter at least R100 and confirm.
- Allow for the 24-hour review before the payout is processed.
FICA verification
Under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, Sportingbet must verify your identity and address. Afrik-foot recommends a bank statement or utility bill as proof of address and reports approval in 24 to 48 hours. Upload clear, recent documents as soon as you register.
Tax on Sportingbet winnings
South African players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings, according to iGaming Times. A proposed 20% national tax on online gambling operators is due to be designed in the February 2027 Budget, Focus GN reported in October 2026. It would be levied on operators, not players, but could affect odds and promotions.
📱 Sportingbet app
Sportingbet is one of the few South African bookmakers with native apps on both Android and iPhone, confirmed by Afrik-foot, AfricaSoccer and bettingexpert. Afrik-foot describes full feature parity with the desktop site, biometric login on Apple devices, an auto-login option and push notifications.
| Detail | Android | iOS |
|---|---|---|
| Where to get it | APK from the “New Android App” button on the mobile site; not on Google Play | App Store: “Sportingbet – Online Betting” (South African account region) |
| Requirements | Android 10.0 or later | iOS 16.0 or later |
| Size | 88.29 MB or 207 MB (both given) | 132.3 MB to 133.9 MB |
| Latest version (Dec 2025) | 25.12.15 | 25.12.19 |
Source: Afrik-foot’s Sportingbet app guide (March 2026). Its review gives about 130 MB on iOS and 200 MB+ of free space on Android; it recommends keeping 250 MB free for updates.
Afrik-foot found the app smoother than the mobile site, with faster, less buffered streaming, quick-stake buttons, auto cash out and push alerts for settled bets. Touch ID login is iPhone-only. There’s no data-free mode, so use Wi-Fi for streaming. Huawei users without Google services can install the Android APK. MightyTips cites a 4.7/5 rating on the App Store. Ignore the separate “Sportingbet Live Scores” app on Google Play, which Afrik-foot doesn’t recommend, and download only from the App Store or sportingbet.co.za.
💬 Customer support
Afrik-foot lists live chat, with a chatbot called “Sam”, and email, available daily from 07:00 to 22:00, and no phone line. Its testers got a live chat reply in under a minute and an email reply in four minutes. bettingexpert, however, lists 24/7 live chat. AfricaSoccer mentions live chat, email and a help centre.

Sportingbet is one of the safest choices in South Africa: a long-established local company, a Western Cape licence and a large, regulated international parent. The 24-hour withdrawal review is a minor inconvenience that partly reflects those checks.
What to do if something goes wrong
- Contact support by live chat or email with screenshots and your transaction reference.
- Check the terms of any bonus or promotion involved.
- Escalate to the WCGRB, which licenses Sportingbet, if the issue isn’t resolved.
🧭 Responsible gambling at Sportingbet
Afrik-foot lists deposit limits, service closure, time-outs from one day to six weeks, and self-exclusion through the WCGRB. It also says the operator may intervene if a player loses R100,000 or more within four weeks. South Africa’s National Register of Excluded Persons applies across licensed operators: under rules gazetted on 10 February 2026, an exclusion takes effect ten days after it’s submitted. The National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free help on 0800 006 008, or send “Help” to 076 675 0710 by WhatsApp or SMS.
Live streaming and in-play betting make it easy to keep betting during a match. Decide your stake before kick-off and stick to it.

Sportingbet has the biggest welcome package of the four, but also some of the toughest wagering. Hollywoodbets is the only one that lets you start without depositing and remains the racing specialist. Betway is the best all-rounder for payment choice. Sportingbet stands out for streaming, promotions such as 2Up and the Multi Boost, and its iPhone app.

🔍 How we researched this review
We checked Sportingbet’s licence against BetScout’s directory, the WCGRB’s licence-holder list and Afrik-foot’s records, and its ownership against Entain’s March 2026 annual report notice and News24’s reports from 2009 and 2010. Bonus terms come from Goal and bettingexpert (October 2026); product, payment, payout-limit and support details from Afrik-foot and AfricaSoccer (2026). We didn’t open a funded account, and we didn’t review casino-style products. Where sources disagree, we show each version.
