Best Betting Apps Under 20MB for Android (October 2026): Lightweight Apps in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana & South Africa
Looking for the best betting apps under 20MB for Android? If your phone is short on storage or you pay for every megabyte of data, a lightweight app makes a real difference. But finding one is harder than it sounds: betting sites publish very different sizes for the same app. We found one app listed at 6.4 MB on one site and 72 MB on another, and another listed at 18 MB and 39.1 MB.
So we did the work. We collected every APK size we could find from October 2026 guides and earlier 2026 reviews, compared them, and checked each brand’s licence in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. This guide ranks only licensed bookmakers, separates the apps that every source puts under 20 MB from the ones where sources disagree, and lists the popular apps that are simply too big. You’ll also find data-free and lite options, safe APK installation steps, and tips to save storage and data.

📌 Key takeaways
Consistently under 20 MB: Easybet (South Africa, 4.05 to 5.1 MB), SportPesa (Kenya, 5 to 10 MB), Odibets (Kenya, 2 to 5 MB) and betPawa Kenya (1.85 MB).
Sources disagree: SportyBet, 22Bet Nigeria, Hollywoodbets, SuperSportBet and Betika are listed under 20 MB by some sites and well above it by others.
Too big: Bet9ja, Betano, 1xBet, Betway, MSport, Paripesa and Betwinner are all reported above 20 MB by every source we found.
Nigeria and Ghana: no licensed app is consistently reported under 20 MB. SportyBet and 22Bet are the closest; mobile sites and lite modes are the safest data savers.
Kenya: the Gambling Regulatory Authority hadn’t published a 2026 licence register as of mid-October 2026, so licence numbers come from operators’ own sites.
Download safety: only install an APK from the bookmaker’s official website or Google Play, never from “mod APK” sites.
This table shows every reported Android size we found for licensed bookmakers’ apps, with the source and date. “Storage” means the space the installed app needs, which is always bigger than the download.

Under 20 MB?
Easybet
🇿🇦 South Africa
5.1 MB (Toffeeweb, 28 Oct 2026); 4.05 MB (Afrik-Foot, Jan 2026); data-free app 9.61 MB
Sizes change with every app update, and many guides don’t say whether they measured the download or the installed app. We rank an app as “under 20 MB” only if every source we found agrees.
📏 Why app size matters for African bettors
Many bettors in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa use entry-level Android phones with limited storage, much of it already taken up by the operating system, WhatsApp, photos and other apps. A 100 MB betting app (and its updates) can be the difference between a phone that works and one that keeps showing “storage full”. Data is the other cost: every download and update comes out of your bundle.
A small app has three practical benefits:
Faster to download and update, even on a slow 3G connection.
Less storage used, which leaves room for other apps and keeps older phones running smoothly.
Less data spent on downloads and updates, although the data you use while betting depends more on how the app loads odds, images and live streams than on its file size.
But size isn’t everything. A tiny app from an unlicensed operator is worse than a slightly bigger one from a licensed bookmaker, because licensing protects your deposits and winnings. That’s why every app in our rankings is from a bookmaker with a licence in the country we list it for.
🔬 How we chose the best betting apps under 20MB
Licence first. We started with bookmakers licensed in each country: the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority register for Nigeria, the Gaming Commission of Ghana’s 2026 list, provincial gambling boards in South Africa, and, for Kenya, the licence numbers operators display, because the Gambling Regulatory Authority hadn’t published a 2026 register as of 14 October 2026, according to iGaming Times.
Collect every reported size. We gathered Android APK sizes from October 2026 app guides (Toffeeweb, Afrik-Foot, Goal) and other 2026 reviews (AfricaSoccer, Paybill KE, TechTrends KE, Soccernet, AfricaBetTips, Pulse Sports and others).
Compare, don’t cherry-pick. An app goes into our “consistently under 20 MB” group only if every size we found was 20 MB or less. Apps with conflicting figures go into a separate group, with all figures shown.
Check the basics. Minimum Android version, whether the app is on Google Play or APK-only, data-free and lite options, and what the app covers (sports, live betting, payments).
No casino promotion in South Africa. Online casino games are illegal under South Africa’s National Gambling Act, so we only cover sports and horse-racing betting there.
🤔 Why do sites report such different app sizes?
When one site says 6.4 MB and another says 72 MB for the same app, at least one is out of date or measuring something different. The most common reasons:
Download vs installed size. An APK is compressed. Once installed, an app takes up more space: AfricaSoccer reports Hollywoodbets as about 18 MB to download but about 45 MB installed. Many guides mix up the two.
Different versions. Apps change with every update. A size measured in January may be wrong by October.
Different countries. The same brand can ship different apps in different countries. AfricaSoccer lists betPawa at 2.5 MB in Uganda but 29 MB in Tanzania.
Android vs iOS. Some guides quote the iPhone app size, which is usually larger (Afrik-Foot lists 22Bet’s iOS app at 254.4 MB).
Data and cache. Apps grow as they store data, so the size in your phone’s settings increases over time.
Simple errors. Some pages contradict themselves; one Bet9ja guide lists 76 MB in its table and “100–500 MB” in its cons.
💡 The only size that really counts is the one your phone shows. Before installing, your browser shows the APK’s file size in the download prompt; after installing, check Settings > Apps > [app name] > Storage.
⭐ Consistently under 20MB: the four best lightweight apps
📱EB
1. Easybet: the best lightweight app in South Africa
📶 Data-free app: yes, 9.61 MB (Afrik-Foot), Android only
🤖 Android version: 8.0+ (Toffeeweb) or 10+ (Afrik-Foot)
🛡️ Licence: Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board 10191733-004; Eastern Cape (ECBM 029)
Why it’s our top pick
Easybet’s Android app is the smallest we found at a licensed South African bookmaker. Toffeeweb’s October 2026 guide lists it at 5.1 MB, and Afrik-Foot’s earlier guide at 4.05 MB, so both sources agree it’s well under 20 MB. Toffeeweb recommends having about 100 MB of free storage for the app and its data.
📶 The data-free version
Easybet also has a separate data-free app. Toffeeweb says it “strips things back to sports and live betting only, letting bets go through without using mobile data or airtime”, while casino games and live-dealer tables aren’t included. Afrik-Foot lists it at 9.61 MB, still well under our 20 MB limit, and Android only; there’s no iOS data-free app.
🛡️ Licence
Easybet Group is licensed by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (10191733-004) and the Eastern Cape Gambling Board, according to ChampsBase and BetScout.
✅ Pros
✅ About 4 to 5 MB, with sources agreeing
✅ Data-free app under 10 MB
✅ Licensed in two provinces
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Sources disagree on the minimum Android version
⚠️ Data-free app is sports only
⚠️ APK, so you must allow installs from your browser
Best for: South African sports bettors with low storage or limited data.
📲 Where to get it: APK from SportPesa’s website (not on Google Play in Kenya, per Paybill KE)
🛡️ Licence: GRAK/2026/BK185751 shown on its site (read 19 Oct 2026, Paybill KE)
Why we rate it
SportPesa is one of Kenya’s best-known bookmakers, and its Android APK is “typically 5 to 10 MB”, according to Paybill KE’s August 2026 guide. That’s one source rather than several, but no source we found reported a bigger figure. Paybill KE adds that phones on Android versions below 8.0 may no longer receive APK updates, and recommends the mobile site for those phones. TechTrends KE describes SportPesa as offering a “data-saving app”.
📟 Betting without the app
If even 10 MB is too much, SportPesa also lets you bet by SMS on 79079, which works on basic phones without an app or data bundle.
🛡️ Licence status
SportPesa displayed the 2026 licence number GRAK/2026/BK185751 on its site when Paybill KE checked on 19 October 2026. Because the Gambling Regulatory Authority hadn’t published a 2026 register as of 14 October 2026, we couldn’t confirm the number on a regulator list.
✅ Pros
✅ 5 to 10 MB APK
✅ SMS betting for basic phones
✅ Displays a 2026 GRA licence number
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Size from a single source
⚠️ Not on Google Play in Kenya
⚠️ Older Android phones may miss updates
Best for: Kenyan bettors who want a big-name bookmaker in a small app.
📲 Where to get it: APK from Odibets’ website, per Paybill KE
🛡️ Licence: shows GRA and BK0001095 / PG-0001096 (Paybill KE, 19 Oct 2026); 2026 licence in dispute
Why we rate it
Odibets is “advertised as light”, according to TechTrends KE, which lists it as a 2 MB app. Paybill KE puts the APK at about 3 to 5 MB. Either way, it’s one of the smallest betting apps we found in any country. TechTrends KE also notes that registration, deposits and betting menus work “with no graphics loading”, which keeps data use low.
📲 Google Play or APK?
Sources disagree. Kenyan media reported in June 2023 that Odibets became Kenya’s first betting app on the Google Play Store, while Paybill KE’s August 2026 guide says Odibets has no Google Play app. Whichever route you use, make sure the app comes from Odibets itself.
⚠️ Licence status
Odibets’ footer showed GRA and its earlier licence numbers when Paybill KE checked on 19 October 2026. 254 News reported that 2026 licence numbers appeared on Odibets’ site on 8 October and were removed by 9 October, as part of court proceedings over new licences. Until the GRA publishes its 2026 register, treat Odibets’ licence status as unconfirmed.
✅ Pros
✅ Only 2 to 5 MB
✅ Light menus with no graphics
✅ Popular Kenyan brand
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ 2026 licence status unconfirmed
⚠️ Sources disagree on Google Play
⚠️ Older phones may miss updates
Best for: Kenyan bettors with very old or very full phones.
📲 Where to get it: Google Play (“betPawa – Sports Betting App” by PawaTech, 100K+ downloads, per Paybill KE, 28 Oct 2026)
🛡️ Licence: shows GRA and BK0001070 / PG0001071 (Paybill KE, 19 Oct 2026)
🌍 Other countries: Ghana app about 30 MB storage (AfricaSoccer)
Why we rate it
TechTrends KE lists betPawa’s Kenyan app as a 1.85 MB download, the smallest figure we found for any licensed bookmaker. betPawa has a reputation for data efficiency: AfricaSoccer’s speed test called its Ugandan app (2.5 MB) “the most data-efficient of any platform we have tested”, though it gave no figure.
📲 Easy to install
Paybill KE found betPawa’s Android app on Google Play, published by PawaTech, with more than 100,000 downloads when it checked on 28 October 2026. That means automatic updates and no need to allow APK installs from your browser.
⚠️ Size varies by country
betPawa’s apps aren’t the same everywhere. AfricaSoccer lists its Tanzanian app at 29 MB and its Ghanaian app at about 30 MB of storage, so betPawa only makes our under-20 MB list for Kenya.
⚠️ Licence status
betPawa’s Kenyan site showed GRA and the licence numbers BK0001070 and PG0001071 when Paybill KE checked on 19 October 2026. These are operator-stated numbers; the GRA’s 2026 register hadn’t been published.
✅ Pros
✅ 1.85 MB download
✅ On Google Play
✅ Known for data efficiency
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Size from a single Kenyan source
⚠️ Bigger apps in Ghana and Tanzania
⚠️ 2026 licence not on a public register yet
Best for: Kenyan bettors who want the smallest possible download from Google Play.
⚠️ Possibly under 20MB: apps where sources disagree
These licensed bookmakers’ apps are listed under 20 MB by at least one source but well above it by others. They may be under 20 MB on your phone, or they may not. We show every figure so you can decide, and we recommend checking the size in your browser’s download prompt before installing.
5. SportyBet: the lightest-looking option in Nigeria and Ghana
★★★★8.0/10
📏 Android size: about 6 MB (AfricaBetTips apps guide); under 20 MB (Nigerian Matchday, Ghana guide); under 30 MB (Pulse Sports); about 35 MB (AfricaBetTips review); 38.57 MB (AfricaSoccer, Ghana)
🛡️ Nigeria licence: Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (Marawin), entry to 4 Jan 2027
🛡️ Ghana licence: Gaming Commission of Ghana, 2026
The size question
SportyBet has the widest range of reported sizes of any app we checked, from about 6 MB to 38.57 MB. Pulse Sports, which ranked it among Nigeria’s best low-data apps in 2026, puts it at “less than 30MB” and says its live streaming works “even with low bandwidth”. Nigerian Matchday’s Ghana guide says the file is “less than 20MB”. AfricaSoccer calls the Ghanaian APK “lightweight” and “data-light”, but lists 38.57 MB in its specification table. Our best guess is that the download is fairly small and the installed app bigger, but we can’t confirm that from the sources.
📲 How to get it
AfricaBetTips says SportyBet’s Android APK isn’t on the Google Play Store for Nigerian users, so you download it from SportyBet’s website. In Ghana, AfricaSoccer points to the app tab on sportybet.com/gh.
🛡️ Licence
SportyBet is licensed in Lagos through Marawin, with a register entry running to 4 January 2027, and holds a Gaming Commission of Ghana licence for 2026 (all Ghanaian licences run from 1 January to 31 December 2026).
✅ Pros
✅ Licensed in Nigeria and Ghana
✅ Rated as low-data by Pulse Sports
✅ Some sources put it under 20 MB
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Reported sizes range from 6 to 38.57 MB
⚠️ APK-only in Nigeria
⚠️ Sources disagree on the minimum Android version
Best for: Nigerian and Ghanaian bettors who want the lightest app from a licensed bookmaker.
6. 22Bet Nigeria: tiny in one guide, big in another
★★★½7.4/10
📏 Android size: 6.4 MB (Afrik-Foot apps guide, 28 Oct 2026); about 72 MB, “~50 MB” elsewhere on the same page (Soccernet, Sep 2026); at least 85 MB storage (Afrik-Foot app guide, Sep 2026)
🤖 Android version: 5.0+ (Soccernet, Afrik-Foot)
🛡️ Licence: Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (Arcadia), entry to 22 May 2027
The size question
Afrik-Foot’s October 2026 roundup of Nigerian betting apps lists 22Bet at just 6.4 MB, but its own 22Bet app guide recommends at least 85 MB of storage, and Soccernet puts the current APK at about 72 MB. Goal’s Kenyan app list gave 15.76 MB for 22Bet in December 2025, which shows how much the figure moves. We can’t say with confidence that 22Bet’s Nigerian app is under 20 MB today.
🛡️ Licence
22Bet is licensed in Lagos through Arcadia, with an entry running to 22 May 2027. In Ghana, 22Bet has a sports-betting entry with the Gaming Commission, but we found no Ghanaian app size, so we only list it for Nigeria.
✅ Pros
✅ Licensed in Lagos to 2027
✅ Runs on Android 5.0 and up
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Sizes from 6.4 MB to 85 MB storage
⚠️ Same source gives two very different figures
Best for: Nigerian bettors on older Android versions.
AfricaSoccer says the Hollywoodbets APK is “approximately 18MB” to download, or 15 to 20 MB, and about 45 MB once installed. Toffeeweb’s October 2026 guide gives 39.1 MB for the APK file, and Afrik-Foot 39.89 MB. Hollywoodbets’ app is downloaded as an APK from hollywoodbets.net rather than Google Play.
📶 Data-Free app
Toffeeweb explains that the main app uses normal mobile data, while zero-rated browsing needs Hollywoodbets’ separate Data-Free site or its dedicated Data-Free Android app. Casino games and GallopTV streaming don’t work in data-free mode. For racing fans on a tight data budget, the Data-Free option matters more than the app size.
✅ Pros
✅ Data-Free app and site
✅ Licensed in several provinces
✅ Strong horse-racing coverage
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Sizes from 18 to 39.89 MB
⚠️ Not on Google Play
⚠️ Data-free mode excludes streaming
Best for: South African racing fans who want a Data-Free option.
📏 Android size: 2.25 MB file, 11.17 MB storage (Afrik-Foot, Jan 2026); about 50 MB (Goal, 1 Oct 2026)
📶 Data-free: yes, a data-free version (Goal)
🛡️ Licence: Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board 10191097
The size question
Afrik-Foot lists SuperSportBet’s Android file at just 2.25 MB, with a storage need of about 11 MB. Goal’s October 2026 review gives “~50 MB” for the Android APK. The gap is too wide to explain by download vs installed size alone, so the app may have grown since January.
📶 Data-free version
Goal says SuperSportBet introduced a data-free version “to reduce costs for mobile users”, letting you place bets without an active data subscription. SuperSportBet launched in South Africa in January 2024 and is licensed by the Western Cape board (10191097).
✅ Pros
✅ Data-free version
✅ Western Cape licence
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Sizes from 2.25 to about 50 MB
⚠️ Newer brand with less track record
Best for: South African soccer fans who want a data-free option.
📏 Android size: “2MB” in the page title vs “~20 MB” in the text (Paybill KE); about 100 MB (AfricaBetTips)
🤖 Android version: 5.0+
📲 Where to get it: Google Play (developer Shop & Deliver Limited, per Paybill KE) or APK from betika.com
🛡️ Licence: shows GRA and BK-0001117 / PG-0001113 (Paybill KE, 19 Oct 2026); 2026 licences challenged in court
The size question
Betika is one of Kenya’s best-known bookmakers, but its app size is unclear. Paybill KE’s guide title promises a “2MB Android App”, while its text says the Play Store download is about 20 MB; AfricaBetTips lists about 100 MB. It’s right on our limit at best.
📶 Bila Bundles
TechTrends KE mentions Betika’s “Bila Bundles” option, which can give access without data on qualifying connections. If you’re mainly worried about data rather than storage, that may matter more than the app size.
⚠️ Licence status
Betika’s footer showed GRA and its earlier licence numbers when Paybill KE checked on 19 October 2026. 254 News reported on 13 October 2026 that an application in the High Court questioned Betika’s new 2026 licences; those are claims by the applicant, not court findings.
✅ Pros
✅ On Google Play, with auto-updates
✅ Bila Bundles option
✅ Runs on Android 5.0+
⚠️ Cons
⚠️ Sizes from 2 MB to about 100 MB
⚠️ 2026 licences challenged in court
Best for: Kenyan bettors who prefer installing from Google Play.
These licensed bookmakers have good apps, but every size we found was above 20 MB. If storage is your main concern, use their mobile sites or lite modes instead (see below).
Several small betting apps appear in “lightweight app” lists but don’t meet our licensing rules for these four countries:
BetKing (Nigeria, 5.87 MB per Afrik-Foot): its Lagos register entry ended on 24 October 2026, and we found no renewed entry.
1Win (5.30 MB per Afrik-Foot): no licence found with the regulators in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or South Africa.
BC.Game (5.3 MB per Afrik-Foot): no Lagos licence found; crypto-first platform.
Yellow Bet (Kenya): praised for data efficiency in a “Brand Partner” article on Tech-ish, which gave no size; licence not independently confirmed.
“Mod APK” versions of SportPesa, Betika or betPawa: unofficial, modified files from third-party sites. Never install them.
🇳🇬 Nigeria: lightweight betting apps
Nigeria has no licensed betting app that every source puts under 20 MB. The closest options are:
SportyBet: reported from about 6 MB to 35 MB; Pulse Sports lists it among Nigeria’s best low-data apps.
22Bet: 6.4 MB in Afrik-Foot’s October 2026 list, but about 72 MB elsewhere.
Nigeria’s two biggest brands, Bet9ja and Betano, are both reported well above 20 MB. Bet9ja’s lighter options are worth knowing about: Soccernet mentions a “Mobile Lite mode for slower connections”, and Pulse Sports describes a Bet9ja lite app “designed for maximum efficiency, even with limited amounts of data”, though neither gives a size.
Licensing: Nigerian betting is licensed by state regulators. All brands we list for Nigeria are on the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority register: SportyBet (Marawin) to 4 January 2027 and 22Bet (Arcadia) to 22 May 2027. Lagos deducts 5% withholding tax on net winnings.
🇰🇪 Kenya: the best market for small betting apps
Kenya has the most lightweight options of the four countries. Three apps are consistently reported under 20 MB: betPawa (1.85 MB), Odibets (2 to 5 MB) and SportPesa (5 to 10 MB). Kenyan bookmakers also offer SMS betting and light, graphics-free menus for basic phones and limited data, according to TechTrends KE.
⚠️ Kenya licence status: Kenya’s new Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) replaced the Betting Control and Licensing Board under the Gambling Control Act 2025. Licences under the old regime were valid until 24 September 2026, and as of 14 October 2026 the GRA hadn’t published a register of 2026 licences, according to iGaming Times. A High Court case over licence fees (JR E251 of 2026) was still pending. The licence numbers in this guide are those operators display on their own sites, as recorded by Paybill KE on 19 October 2026. Check gra.go.ke before you deposit.
Google Play in Kenya: sources disagree. Paybill KE says SportPesa and Odibets aren’t on Google Play in Kenya, but found betPawa and Betika there in 2026; Kenyan media reported that Odibets (in June 2023) and Betika had been approved for the Play Store.
Tax: Kenya charges 5% excise duty on deposits and 5% withholding tax on withdrawals.
🇬🇭 Ghana: lightweight betting apps
We found no licensed Ghanaian app that every source puts under 20 MB. SportyBet is the closest: Nigerian Matchday’s Ghana guide says the APK is “less than 20MB”, while AfricaSoccer lists 38.57 MB. betPawa, so small in Kenya, needs about 30 MB of storage in Ghana, according to AfricaSoccer. Betway (about 40 MB) and 1xBet (about 60 MB) are bigger, according to Bets GH.
Licensing: SportyBet, betPawa, Betway, MSport, Betika and 1xBet all hold 2026 licences from the Gaming Commission of Ghana. All Ghanaian licences run from 1 January to 31 December 2026. Ghana abolished its tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025.
🇿🇦 South Africa: small apps and data-free options
South Africa has the clearest winner: Easybet’s app is 4.05 to 5.1 MB, and its data-free app 9.61 MB. Hollywoodbets (18 to 39.89 MB) and SuperSportBet (2.25 to about 50 MB) are disputed, while Betway, Sportingbet and 10bet are bigger.
South Africa is also the home of data-free betting. Several licensed bookmakers offer zero-rated sites or apps, which matter more than app size if you’re short of data:
Easybet: data-free app, sports and live betting only (Toffeeweb).
Hollywoodbets: Data-Free site and Android app; no casino or GallopTV streaming (Toffeeweb).
Betway: Data Free mode on Android; deposits and withdrawals still need data (Toffeeweb).
SuperSportBet: data-free version (Goal).
Legal note: sports and horse-racing betting with a provincially licensed bookmaker is legal. Online casino games are illegal under section 11 of the National Gambling Act, so we don’t promote the casino sections of these apps.

🛠️ How to install a betting APK safely
Many betting apps in Africa aren’t on Google Play, so you install them as APK files. Here’s how to do it safely on most Android phones:
Go to the bookmaker’s official website by typing the address yourself, for example easybet.co.za or sportpesa.com. Don’t use links from WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS.
Find the app download link, usually in the menu, footer or an “App” tab.
Check the file size shown in your browser’s download prompt before you confirm.
Allow installs from your browser when Android asks; the setting is usually under Settings > Apps > Special access > Install unknown apps.
Open the downloaded APK and tap Install.
Switch the permission off again for your browser once the app is installed.
Log in and complete verification (KYC or FICA) before depositing.
💡 Some apps are on Google Play in some countries (for example, betPawa and Betika in Kenya, according to Paybill KE). If the bookmaker’s site links to Google Play, use it: Play apps update automatically and are scanned by Google Play Protect.
🔍 How to check an app’s real size on your phone
Before installing: the browser’s download prompt shows the APK file size.
After installing: open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Storage to see the app size, user data and cache.
Over time: check again every few months. Apps grow as they cache images and data, and updates can add features.
Clear the cache in the same Storage screen if the app gets big; it doesn’t log you out or delete your account.
💡 Tips to save storage and data while betting
Turn off auto-play video and live streaming unless you really need it. Streaming uses far more data than placing bets.
Update apps on Wi-Fi only. In Google Play, set app updates to “Over Wi-Fi only”.
Use pre-match betting rather than live betting when data is tight, because live odds refresh constantly.
Keep one or two betting apps rather than many. Uninstall apps you don’t use.
Use data-free modes where available, especially in South Africa.
Clear the cache every few weeks to recover storage.
Turn on Android’s Data Saver to stop background data use.
🚩 Red flags: “lite” and “mod” APKs to avoid
“Mod APK” sites offering modified betting apps, sometimes promising “unlimited money” or “hacked odds”. They’re unofficial, can contain malware, and no real bookmaker will pay winnings from a hacked app.
“Lite” versions on file-sharing sites that the bookmaker doesn’t link to from its own website.
Apps asking for SMS, contacts or accessibility permissions that a betting app doesn’t need.
Look-alike apps with names like “SportyBet Pro” or “Betika Lite VIP” in unofficial stores.
Unlicensed brands advertising tiny apps and huge bonuses. A small app is no use if you can’t withdraw your winnings.
📖 Glossary
APK: Android Package, the file used to install Android apps outside Google Play.
Download size: the size of the APK file you download.
Installed size: the space the app takes up after installation, usually larger than the download.
Cache: temporary files the app stores to load faster; safe to clear.
Data-free (zero-rated): a site or app that your mobile network doesn’t charge data for.
Lite mode: a simplified version of a betting site or app that loads fewer images and features.
KYC / FICA: identity checks required before withdrawals; FICA is South Africa’s version.
GRA / LSLGA / GCG: the gambling regulators in Kenya, Lagos (Nigeria) and Ghana.
🧘 Responsible gambling
A small, fast app makes betting easier, which is exactly why it’s worth setting limits. Use the deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion tools in your account, turn off promotional notifications, and never bet with money you need for rent, food or school fees.
🇬🇭 Ghana: the GCG’s self-exclusion programme; Mental Health Authority helpline 0800 678 678.
🇿🇦 South Africa: National Responsible Gambling Programme 0800 006 008, or WhatsApp “Help” to 076 675 0710; the national Register of Excluded Persons.
🔞 Adults only: you must be 18 or older to bet in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa.

Easybet in South Africa (4.05 to 5.1 MB) is our top pick. In Kenya, SportPesa (5 to 10 MB), Odibets (2 to 5 MB) and betPawa (1.85 MB) are all consistently reported under 20 MB.
What is the smallest betting app?
betPawa Kenya, at 1.85 MB according to TechTrends KE, was the smallest figure we found for a bookmaker licensed in its country. Odibets (2 to 5 MB) is close behind.
Is there a betting app under 20MB in Nigeria?
Possibly, but no source agrees. SportyBet is reported from about 6 MB to 35 MB, and 22Bet from 6.4 MB to about 72 MB. Bet9ja and Betano are well above 20 MB.
Is there a betting app under 20MB in Ghana?
SportyBet Ghana is listed as “less than 20MB” by Nigerian Matchday but 38.57 MB by AfricaSoccer. No licensed Ghanaian app is consistently under 20 MB.
Which South African betting app uses the least data?
Data-free options use no mobile data on zero-rated pages: Easybet’s data-free app (9.61 MB), Hollywoodbets’ Data-Free app and site, Betway’s Data Free mode and SuperSportBet’s data-free version.
Why do websites show different sizes for the same app?
They measure different things (download vs installed size), different versions, different countries’ apps, or the iPhone app. Some pages also contradict themselves.
How do I check an app’s size before installing?
Your browser shows the APK’s file size in the download prompt. After installing, check Settings > Apps > [app name] > Storage.
Is the Bet9ja app under 20MB?
No. Sources put it between 50 MB and 97.6 MB. Soccernet mentions a Mobile Lite mode for slower connections, and Pulse Sports describes a Bet9ja lite app, but neither gives a size.
Is the SportyBet app under 20MB?
Sources disagree, from about 6 MB to 38.57 MB. It may be under 20 MB to download but larger once installed.
Is the Hollywoodbets app under 20MB?
AfricaSoccer says about 18 MB to download (45 MB installed), while Toffeeweb and Afrik-Foot list about 39 MB. Hollywoodbets also has a Data-Free app.
Is the Betway app under 20MB?
No. Reported sizes are about 30 to 43 MB. In South Africa, Betway’s Data Free mode helps with data, not storage.
Are betting APKs safe to install?
Yes, if you download them from the bookmaker’s official website. Never install betting apps from “mod APK” or file-sharing sites.
Why aren’t all betting apps on Google Play?
Google Play only allows real-money gambling apps in some countries and under certain conditions, so many African bookmakers distribute their Android apps as APKs from their own sites.
Do small apps use less data?
They use less data to download and update. While betting, data use depends more on images, live odds and streaming than on app size.
Which app works on old Android phones?
Sources list Android 5.0+ for 22Bet and Betika, and 7.0+ for SportyBet. Paybill KE says SportPesa and Odibets may stop updating on versions below 8.0, and Easybet needs 8.0 or 10 depending on the source.
Can I bet without an app or data?
Yes, in some cases. SportPesa offers SMS betting on 79079 in Kenya, and South African bookmakers offer data-free sites and apps.
Are Kenyan betting apps licensed in 2026?
The GRA hadn’t published a 2026 register as of 14 October 2026. SportPesa displays a 2026 licence number; Odibets, Betika and betPawa display earlier numbers. Check gra.go.ke before depositing.
Why isn’t BetKing on the list?
BetKing’s app is small (5.87 MB per Afrik-Foot), but its Lagos register entry ended on 24 October 2026 and we found no renewed entry.
Should I use a mobile site instead of an app?
If you bet occasionally or your phone is very full, yes. A mobile site takes no storage and updates automatically.
How do I make a betting app use less storage?
Clear its cache in Settings > Apps > Storage, turn off auto-play video, and uninstall betting apps you don’t use.
Can I use these apps in South Africa for casino games?
We don’t recommend it. Online casino games are illegal under South Africa’s National Gambling Act, so we only cover sports and horse-racing betting there.
How often do app sizes change?
With every update. That’s why we show the source and date for each figure and suggest checking the download prompt yourself.
🏁 Final verdict: the best betting apps under 20MB for Android
If you want a licensed betting app under 20 MB, Easybet is the clear choice in South Africa, with a 4 to 5 MB app and a data-free version under 10 MB. In Kenya, SportPesa, Odibets and betPawa are all consistently small, though Kenya’s 2026 licence register is still awaited. In Nigeria and Ghana, no licensed app is reliably under 20 MB: SportyBet is the lightest-looking option, and mobile sites or Bet9ja’s lite mode are good alternatives. Whatever you choose, download only from the bookmaker’s official site or Google Play, and check the size in your download prompt.
