🆕 What counts as a new online casino in Ghana?

Every licence on the Gaming Commission of Ghana’s register runs for a single calendar year. When we checked in October 2026, every Online Casino entry showed the same dates: issued on 1 January 2026 and expiring on 31 December 2026. That means the register itself can’t tell you which brands are new, because an operator that has been in Ghana for years and one that arrived this spring look exactly the same.

So we used a stricter test. In this guide, a “new online casino in Ghana” is a brand that:

• appears on the GCG register with an Online Casino licence for 2026, and
• launched in Ghana, or launched its casino product in Ghana, during 2026, according to independent industry media or national press.

Three brands pass both tests. Betano’s launch event in Accra in February 2026 was attended by the GCG’s Acting Commissioner. BC.GAME announced its Ghana launch at bcgame.com.gh on 29 July 2026 after approval from the Commission. And in March 2026 the Ghanaian Times described Betika Ghana as “the newest online casino platform to enter the local market”; Betika’s sportsbook has been in Ghana longer, but its casino now holds its own GCG licence.

The Gaming Commission of Ghana publishes a register of licensed operators showing each trade name, its operation type and the licence dates. When we checked, it held 88 licence entries for 70 trade names across nine categories. Twenty entries, for 19 trade names, carry the Online Casino category. Every one was issued on 1 January 2026 and expires on 31 December 2026, and all are listed in Accra.

The register also has a separate Remote Interactive Games category with 13 entries, including 999 YES, BIGWINS, G&H BET, GAME KAYA, GOLDEN GAMES, GOWIN21, LUCKYLIVE, LUCKYWIN, NUMBA, PRIDESPINS, WINPLAY, WINSLOTS and WINWIN. The register doesn’t label these as online casinos, so we haven’t counted them here, but they are licensed by the Commission.

The launch

Betano is run by Kaizen Gaming, one of Europe’s largest online gaming groups, and Ghana became its 20th regulated market and its first new market of 2026. The brand marked the launch at an event in Accra in February 2026 attended by the Gaming Commission’s Acting Commissioner, Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo, who said: “We welcome Betano’s entry into Ghana.” Kaizen employs more than 3,000 people worldwide.

Betano appears on the GCG register with both an Online Casino and a Sports Betting entry for 2026. Ghana’s rules require gambling licensees to keep a local office that files accounts and maintains customer records with the Commission.

According to BetRank Ghana’s September 2026 review, stages 2 and 4 need deposits of at least GHS 100, and stages 3 and 5 need at least GHS 300. That 30x requirement is serious. A GHS 100 stage bonus means GHS 3,000 in qualifying bets within a week. Pick the offer only if you were planning to play that much anyway.

Established casinos with 2026 licences

If you’d rather stick with a brand that has a longer track record in Ghana, Betway, SportyBet, MSport, betPawa, 1xBet and Betwinner all hold Online Casino entries on the 2026 register alongside their sports licences. They aren’t new, so they’re outside this ranking, but they’re licensed alternatives.

📈 Why new casino brands are coming to Ghana

Ghana has become one of the most attractive regulated markets in Africa for online gambling companies. According to H2 Gambling Capital figures quoted by iGaming Business, Ghana’s online gross win reached US$903.5 million in 2025, up 24% from US$729.8 million the year before. That growth, combined with a licensing regime that has existed since 2006, is why international groups are applying for Ghanaian licences rather than serving the country from offshore.

Both of 2026’s biggest arrivals said as much. Kaizen Gaming cited Ghana’s growing digital adoption and its regulatory framework when it launched Betano, and BC.GAME’s legal counsel called Ghana’s regulatory framework “well-established” when it announced its launch. For players, more licensed competition usually means better products, local apps and more effort on payments, but it also means more marketing, so it’s worth knowing how to judge a new casino on more than its bonus.

There’s no single right answer, but the trade-offs are worth thinking through before you sign up.

A new casino has to work hard to win you over. That usually means a structured welcome offer, fresh apps and an effort to tailor the product to Ghanaian players, as Betano and BC.GAME have both said they’re doing. Big international newcomers also bring experience from regulated markets elsewhere, which tends to show in clear terms and responsible gambling tools.

The risks are different, though. A new brand has no Ghanaian track record yet, so you can’t rely on years of other players’ experiences with withdrawals. Payment menus and offers often change in the first months, and some details, like which mobile money wallets are supported, may not be published anywhere outside the cashier. Smaller newcomers may also have less money behind them than the giants.

Whichever way you go, the licence check is the same. A casino that isn’t on the GCG register with an Online Casino entry shouldn’t get your money, however new, big or generous it looks.

⚖️ Is online casino legal in Ghana?

Yes. Online casino gaming is legal in Ghana when the operator holds a licence from the Gaming Commission of Ghana. Here’s how the system works in 2026.

The Gaming Act and the Commission

Gambling in Ghana is governed by the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721), and overseen by the Gaming Commission under the Ministry of the Interior. The Act doesn’t mention online play directly, but the Commission licenses online casinos and charges fees for them under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations, 2025. Operating without a licence is a criminal offence, and licences must be renewed every year.

Licence categories and fees

The Commission’s fee schedule covers online sports betting, land-based and hybrid sports betting, online casino, remote interactive games, land-based casino, route operations, and scratch card or bingo, plus a promotional gaming permit. An online casino licence costs US$50,000, with a US$25,000 renewal fee and a US$50,000 annual operational fee. Those costs are one reason a genuine new entrant tends to be a well-funded company.

Changes in the pipeline

A Legislative Instrument setting out detailed rules on licensing, compliance and responsible gaming was completed and submitted for approval in 2025 and was still awaiting passage in 2026. An amendment to the Gaming Act to deal with digital and online platforms was initiated in 2025 and is being progressed with the Attorney General’s Department, but no bill had been published. If either passes, the rules for online casinos could change, so we’ll update this guide.

Tax on casino winnings

Ghana introduced a 10% withholding tax on gambling winnings in August 2023, then scrapped it. Parliament passed the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill on 26 March 2025, and the repeal took effect on 2 April 2025. Licensed casinos therefore shouldn’t deduct a winnings tax from your payouts. Operators still pay 20% tax on their gross gaming revenue.

Age and Ghana Card checks

You must be 18 or older to gamble in Ghana. Operators must use the Ghana Card as the sole identifier for gaming transactions and verify it with the issuing authority, and in 2025 the Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Identification Authority so licensees can connect to its biometric verification platform. Licensed operators are also accountable institutions under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020.

Enforcement against illegal sites

In January 2025, the Commission asked the National Communications Authority to restrict access to 11 unauthorised gaming websites and told payment providers to check with it before taking on gaming clients. During 2025, the payment platforms of ten illegal online betting operators were blocked, illegal casinos in Osu and Tema were shut down, and three licences were suspended. In May 2026, the Interior Ministry flagged illegal online gaming platforms as a concern.

Advertising rules: how to spot a licensed casino’s ads

The Commission’s advertising guidelines require gaming ads to be approved, to carry responsible gambling warnings such as “Gamble Responsibly”, to avoid celebrity endorsements and prime-time broadcast slots, and to keep stationary outdoor ads at least 200 metres from schools and playgrounds. An advert that breaks these rules, for example one fronted by a celebrity or promising easy money, is a good reason to double-check the brand on the register.

VAT on stakes

Ghana’s VAT Act, 2025 took effect on 1 January 2026 at a rate of 15%, and betting and gaming aren’t listed as exempt. We found no official guidance on whether VAT applies to players’ stakes, so if a new casino deducts anything from your deposits, ask its support to explain the charge.

It takes a few minutes to check a new casino, and it’s worth doing every time.

1. Open the GCG register. Go to gamingcommission.gov.gh and open the list of licensed operators.
2. Find the trade name. Search for the casino’s brand name, such as BETANO or BC GAME.
3. Check the category. For casino games, the brand needs an Online Casino entry. A sports betting licence alone doesn’t cover the casino.
4. Check the dates. Make sure today’s date falls between the issue and expiry dates. In 2026, every online casino licence runs to 31 December 2026.
5. Check the domain. Use the brand’s Ghanaian site, usually ending in .com.gh, such as bcgame.com.gh or betano.com.gh.
6. Verify with your Ghana Card. A licensed casino will ask for it. A site that never asks for ID isn’t following Ghana’s rules.
